"Darnay Hoffman" Posted by New York Lawyer on 20:09:14 5/15/2000 New York Post (May 15th) HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED TO JAID AFTER HER GUN ARREST by Cindy Adams YESTERDAY you read about the arrest of Jaid Barrymore, oft called the oft- troubled mother of Drew Barrymore. Jaid was busted out of the slammer after 12 hours due to the efforts of three people: Lawyer Darnay Hoffman, lawyer Barry Slotnick and a little bit me. The story behind the story: At 2 a.m. she was putting up posters advertising her boyfriend's band. Staying out late doing dumb things is not against the law but, since it was some area where you shouldn't be putting up posters, two cops collared her for defacing property. She was handcuffed. The pistol-packing mama was then booked on gun possession. Her first call, 3 a.m., was to her friend Sydney Biddle Barrows. I've heard Jaid's calm, clear, unhysterical words on the answering machine. She said: "Sydney, this is a message if you're out of town. I'm in jail. At the 13th Precinct here in New York. I need your husband. I'll be in court later this morning, and I really need help." Sydney and lawyer husband Darnay Hoffman were asleep. Jaid's second message included the stationhouse phone number, and it, too, said simply: "Please call me immediately." Darnay, who specializes in civil proceedings, retrieved his messages 6 a.m. Minutes later he woke me and said: "I'm going there to see what I can do and to comfort her, but once you're in the system it's tough to get out." Knowing it was the weekend and this was now a felony proceeding, I gave him Barry's Slotnick's home number. We then woke up Barry, who began working the system immediately. She'd told the police her gun was legally registered in L.A. She'd gotten it years back when she and Drew were being stalked. She'd neglected to re-register in New York. She was carrying it now because she'd recently been in the off-Broadway show "The Dressingroom" and, going home late and alone, was stalked in the subway. The perp chased her so that she fell down in panic. She actually showed the still visible bruises to the cops. Anyway, in this city that never sleeps, that's the background to the tale New Yorkers read on the front page of this paper yesterday. "NYL" Posted by Greenleaf on 06:05:00 5/16/2000 I'm somewhat impressed that you would take the time to post that here. I found it mildly interesting, but here is a question for you. Do you read Justice Watch every day? Do you think a lot of people in the legal community, read these threads? Do you think the Ramseys read here? (and maybe even post here?) I have reason to believe they do. Anyway, I always read your posts, and most of them are very newsworthy. Thank you for sharing.
