"Front page, above the fold" Posted by Orsen on 18:39:08 6/28/2000 NOTE: This message was last edited 18:39:08, 6/28/2000 "And the Lord said "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot." God was misquoted. Hi folks. I think the subject of the media, both its conduct and its influence throughout the JonBenet Ramsey case is something I'd like to explore. I think its time we took an unbiased, objective, accurate and uncensored look at a part of this case which, at times, has been biased, subjective, inaccurate and censored. When the people who report the story become as big as the story itself....that is news. Lets start with the main problem, a media which invades a community with the sole objective of transforming a local story into national news. When this happens a seemingly innocuous murder of a little girl is turned into an inhuman interest story by the power of the press, a fourth estate that feeds on itself until it becomes bloated, pretentious, arrogant and full of style but no substance, just like the NBC News peacock. The genesis of this started in Britian when the TabLoydd's of London started to treat the Windsor's like, well, us. When the British rags started going for blue blood they found increased circulation and a ton of Pounds coming in via ad revenues. And when these Royalty cheques started to roll in there was no stopping the presses. Next came the National Enquirer, the Globe and the Star. It wasn't until the OJ trial that the mainstream media jumped on the band wagon, and wanted to know who was lying underneath the wheels. Then came Boulder and the rest, as they say, is inaccurate, unsubstantiated, biased, muckraking, libelous history. Now the media is staffed with reporters who have the journalism skills of Jimmy Olsen but persevere by using the bottom by-line, money. Folks the only time any of these hacks wants to come close to proper Grammar is when the headline reads "Frasier star says Cheers when Eddie killed by dump truck." The 5 W's of journalism are long gone, given to Vanna White as a birthday gift. Now its headlines, the real reporting is done by you people right here. What happened to investagative journalism? What happened to the Lou Grant style of reporting, the beat reporter who drank too much coffee and booze, always had a Marlboro hanging on his lips, which for the most part were sealed until his story came out. Where are the Edward R.'s of To-Murrow who chased a story with intelligence, leg work, no sleep and bad food, then came back to the paper at 2 in the morning and banged out their work on an Underwood that had a stuck 'f'key, was stuffed with carbon paper and had enough white-out on the roller that it seemed these Jimmy Breslin's were typing in a snow storm. I'm not advocating a return to those days, just the people who reported about those days. Folks journalistic nostalgia and a couple of du wops will land us right back in the fifties, which we don't want. Back then newspapers were notorious for underpaying and overworking their employees, and yes there was the odd reporter who dug for a JonBenet story like he was Danny Devito's character in LA Confidential. Everything on the QT, hush, hush. Newspapers made so much money back then they could afford to have all of the black ink from their afternoon edition end up on your clothes. I think good, old investigative journalism died when Bob Woodward took the job as Senior Editor of the Washington Post and Carl Bernstein decided to drink so much he was last seen writing his own obituary. Hey Carl you could turn your career around if you went to Boulder and started doing a Watergate on this whole thing. Christ I'd love to see Woodward and Berstein team up again and tackle this case. Hell I'd even settle for Redford and Hoffman...Dustin not Daniel. Hey guys there's more deep throats in Boulder then in the oral sex section of your local Adult Video Store so pack your bags. I realize its a new breed of reporters folks buts its who they're breeding with that bothers me. You can't turn the dial without seeing someone on CNBC who happens to be married to someone on FOX who just got a divorce from Larry King. Here comes the bribe. Larry's on his 8th wife folks, you'd think he'd set aside an hour to interview these women before asking for their hand, hey Larry next time just marry an octopus. This guy has been down on one knee so many times when he loses a contact lens at CNN every woman in the building bolts for the door. Then they all came to Boulder and the case saw more leaks then a plumber at SeaWorld. Reporters using detectives, DA's using reporters and editors using their slush funds. Everybody was leaking information and everybody wanted a piece of that USA Today pie chart, all in the name of exposure. Folks the leaks got so bad Boulder city officials tried to call in Anne Heche to put her fingers in the dike. She was busy, turns out she was already doing it to Ellen Degeneres. Well I for one have had enough. I refuse to read anything that is salacious, gratuitous, and panders to the lowest common denominator....unless I've written it. I get the feeling I'm alone on this though, turns out man can be an island, after I vote that retired Navy Seal off. Oh well, if its not Brokow don't fix it. What I do still believe in is freedom of the press and freedom of speech, even if that speech has an impediment. Thats what it Boyles down to folks. JFJB. It seems like Greenleaf has rubbed off on you too. You're both very good at putting the little innuendos in there and it's refreshing. You make me miss the "good old days"... (one thing though, leave that retired navy seal alone, ok? He at least gave his all for our country to stay free) [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 2. This piece is as good as Greenleaf's piece last year, "Amazing Grace" Thank you. (I was going to say from the bottom of my heart, but didn't want to sound too sappy. But I did just put up my 4th of July flags and decorations and am feeling rather patriotic right now) Bet this will bring mame out of hibernation. Thanks again, Orsen. Who are you, anyhow? edited to ask Greenleaf to re-run her Amazing Grace post [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 3. If you get grief from any who writhe and moan when anyone outside the US isn't "properly respectful" of our media (ala Michael Tracey & co.), let it bounce off the top of your head. Sometimes the clearest view is from a distance. This is the best piece you've done, and certainly the best article posted in JW for ages. Gave me several smiles. In fact, I don't remember writing it. Are you sure I am the author? I rarely save anything I write. Perhaps Chris can find it. Orsen, that was a great post. Edited to add this p.s. to Seeker: Thanks, Seeker, for the nice compliment. GL [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 7.
