"On the old BNF" Posted by Greenleaf on 07:58:06 7/28/2000 I posted, for awhile as "MinnieHaHa," until someone stole that name from me. As "MinnieHaHa" I remember responding to jams' posts. She was, of course, a male back then; her "wife" having been killed on the Audobon (sp?) highway in Germany. There was a period of time when I came to her defense, as so many posters were giving her hell, even in those early days. I had the feeling that I was corresponding with John Ramsey. We had one poster who proclaimed herself to be the guardian of the threads. I think her hat was "threader." Does anyone remember? She gave us all "fits." I used other names too; but will only confess to "Minnie." Since J7, I have only gone by the hat "Greenleaf;" However, briefly (after making only a couple of posts on the new BNF) I posted as "redleaf." The BNF was a wild and wooley place. Looking back now, I firmly believe that the RST had something to do with its demise. I think they used the PTL as a tool to help destroy it. BNF was there first. It really served a purpose, as the internet was having growing pains. I once read a history of the JonBenet forums, by the poster "V." It was the very best summery of the BNF and J7 I had ever read. I wish someone could find it and repost it here. Greenleaf [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 3. "Jay...now Cassandra" Posted by Cassandra on 08:20:31 7/28/2000 Jay and sometimes just as a wiseass. After things turned ugly, I posted as Cassandra, because I drew so much heat as Jay. We didn't even have to wear a hat then. That's why it was so wild and fun, and such a blast, but sometimes posters got really ugly, and ultimately destroyed the forum, unfortunately. Now we are proper and there are rules, with someone ready to blast threads into oblivion as happened to me recently when I asked a legitimate question about hir. Now I think JW is too trigger happy, as a result of that incident, but I don't make the rules. Mostly I read the faction opinions, now, and wait to see if anything ever happens in the case. I think many people have lost sight of the murdered child and veered off into other avenues, but I find the Scamseys and their cult endlessly entertaining. "I'll play too" Posted by Waiting on 08:58:36 7/28/2000 NOTE: This message was last edited 08:58:36, 7/28/2000 I think the first "hat" I had on the BNF was "Sodbuster." Then there was some big flap and everybody got paranoid about it (at least I did) and thought I should change my "hat" or somehow those little twerps would track me down and harass me like they did some of the others. So then I became "Stormy Eyes." I posted under that 'til the endtimes of BNF, may it rest in peace. When I came here, there were one or two other people with the word "Stormy" in their hat, so I changed to "Waiting." Had I but known I would still BE waiting after all this time, I think I would have chosen something more euphonius! Jay/Cassandara, I DO remember that old hat! Wow, I didn't realize you were one and the same! I think maybe the only person who's still the same is Fly. C'mon everybody else, this is fun! I believe I came to the BNF in late February or early March right after the murder. I never used another hat because a) I always stand by what I say--back then, now, and through whatever might happen in the future. If I said it, I own it. But it's more: b) being a bit absentminded, I might forget what hat I would have been using. Cher . [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 10. "Hi Yung" Posted by Gemini on 09:59:31 7/28/2000 I was never a BNF poster ... started at Dan's very first J7. GEM was my first hat and changed to Gemini in the summer of '97. Have never changed it since. People still use both versions. Unless there have been some hat changes I don't recognize, DocG, Lake and Tedleg are the only other members of the first J7 I see here ... although Jonesy, Maxi, MsBrady (as Carol), Teague, Jeanne (oops, I mean Ginja), Harmony/Melissa and Lacey ... also Jameson, came in soon after. Then, most of the BNF folks showed up during the time of the second version of David's J7 software in late summer '97, after their homebase had been wiped out by the PLA. As the forums have evolved (yes Shadow, that's exactly what they've done), we've lost many, many good posters, but gained some as well. Guess that's life, virtual or RT. Yes, I had a "few" more hats..... How about some very early BNF trivia for the old timers: 1. Name the first BNF poster...and yes, she still has the same hat and posts here (once a year..LOL). 2. Name the second poster on the BNF. Hint: He was Pasta Jay's cousin. 3. Which state was home to the most posters in the first few weeks of BNF? Name some of them. 4. Name the hot tub party participants in the first couple of weeks of the BNF. 5. Name Rosebud's first hat. 6. What was the first hat of the PLA person, Samantha? 7. What was the other hat for the post known as babyduck? 8. Which poster inspired the thread "Running Man"? 9. Which hat created Simba? 10. Name all of Chris' hats. I do remember a Dee, but I don't know if that was here or there, I never posted anywhere else. When JW opened up I signed up here as DiDi as well and then something happened and we had to re-register if I remember right. When I tried to put my hat in it was already taken so I switched mine to DebDeb. Whenever I have posted since (which isn't all too often) that's what's it's been under. After switching to DebDeb I do remember a didi posting here at some point, and since you've always been Canadiana here, looks like there is yet another didi running around, lol! Right after the LKL interview, I went looking for information and found BNF. All I did was read for a long time and posted seldom. I was BayB B, then at some point had to switch to baybb1 for a while. At the Tom Sullivan JBR Forum and at j-7, I was Bea Haven, sometimes Miss Bea Haven. Went thru all the PLA stuff at BNF and was part of the "NightShift" that tried to save case threads from being destroyed. ThreadWatcher made 10 numbered Daily threads and we posted all case news on those and if more were needed, made more for that day. I was there when BNF switched to a registered Forum and was the first poster on that for a while, even beating the Sysop to posting. Then the old BNF Troll e-mailed them saying he was the real BayBB and they gave him my Hat and deleted my posts. They finally gave me back my Hat but he had other forms of BayBB registered and I had to beg him to give me the passwords to those hats and he finally did so. Hi Zane, Long time, no see. She made fun of my Patsy in my story line "Inside Patsy's Head" once and we had a bit of a tiff about it. She never replied to me again! But I did write on the old BNF and was there, lurking mostly during the ongoing battles and frequent thread raids, and of course the ever popular spamming..... I always wrote there as Voyager and remember many of the hats mentioned. Remember the evening writers bar and funky restaurant created to go and unwind and relax after a hard day of posting and fighting the good fight. Lordy, what was it called? and anyone remember who created it? wasn't it Tex something? Many a fun cocktail receipe created and shared there! I only posted under one other name at the very first forum I found on the net about JonBenet...this was only a month or so after the murder as I remember it. I think it was just called The JonBenet Ramsey Forum and was run by a man who advertised vitamin and mineral supplements...He had pretty much a hands off policy but every once in a while it would get pretty wild and wolly and someone would e-mail him and he would come in with a night stick and settle things down for a while....LOL...he was in real life, a policeman. On that forum I posted as....guess I do not have the courage to post it cause not only would it not be popular but there was a e-mail stalker who wouldn't leave me alone...better not. Anyway this is the forum where Panico and I met. When she got disgusted and moved to Dan's J-7, I followed to read mostly and then over to the Boulder forum, just back and forth....crazy days and crazy people then too! "Gem's Right" Posted by Teague on 15:00:20 7/28/2000 Still can't call her Gemini, 'cause I first met her as Gem, and so she shall stay! (Hi Gem :-)) I got my first computer Memorial Day '97, was toodling around learning how to do net searches, and since I'd been following the JBR case in the news since day one, did a search and happened upon Dan's J-7. It had to be only minutes (well maybe a day or two) after the switch to the "new" software (which would seem antiquated by these standards), because there was all manner of congratulations for Dan and the new format. Gem and Mellow (where the heck is she anyway?) were the first to warmly welcome me. Lacey was there, Tedleg, DocG, Scully, Linda (who I haven't seen in forever), and others, and I was immensely impressed with the quality of discussion. Stayed up for hours that night reading all the threads. Oh, Ray (LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL) was there, and PooperScooper stopped in shortly thereafter, as did MIKE (now micmacin). Like Shadow and Fly and Gem, I've never posted under other hats but Teague. Well, not entirely true. Lacey and I used to have great fun on the Old Front Porch doing theme threads for holidays and such, and then there was our infamous "J-7 Posters Thread" when we became Thelma and Louise. Those were definitely "the days," as they say. Have made some great friends here and have missed them when I couldn't be here as often. I started out reading JonBenet threads on alt.true-crime, having done a DejaNews search to find those, and someone there posted the BNF address. This was late Janurary or early February, 1997. I don't post much, since I am still a fan of Lacey's, and she basically says it all, as far as I am concerned. Whatever Lacey sez, that's what I believe, too. Also, as I told Cher a little bit ago, I have been on the Internet a long time (1993) and I am a 12-Stepper in recovery from Net Addiction, having been sucked into virtual environments and mailing lists early on. So that is why I never do chat and don't socialize, even tho I like everybody here. There were some early discussions of "Why We Are Here" which I found very interesting and personally relevant. "Fra Angelico, on-island..." Posted by Fra on 21:23:51 7/28/2000 Hi BayBB, Jay, Cher, and the other old timers and newbies and those in-between posting on this thread. I joined BNF in late February of '97 as "Fra Angelico." I never posted as any other, although I did shorten my hat to "Fra" for JusticeWatch. Some exceptionally clever case writing appeared in those BNF early days, as well as many, many very funny pieces -- wonderfully creative work. Yes, someone above mentioned our night "bar side" gatherings with the virtual credit card -- drinks and snacks and orange hostess cupcakes. It was informative and quite hilarious. I'll forever praise the BNF forum as the most ideal format I've ever known, as it was much more a "chat" experience than a post and run. We'd very often find ourselves posting as in a chat, that is to say LIVE -- others present at their keyboards in real time, responding to you. Although it was better than a chat, as our individual posts were rather well composed, unlike the typical chat post of a single line or so given off-handedly. About every minute a new post would appear - perhaps six lines or so -- and someone then would compose a response, and likely two or three other posts in the next few minutes would appear on the topic. Stimulating and fun give-and-take... and most importantly it seemed you were in a single room with the other posters, as in a class discussion around a table. A response to any question or comments on an observation were immediate. And you'd find yourself part of a core group a la "Cheers," recognized and greeted as soon as you entered the "Room." Or the "Bar" if it was late in the evening. Or you may even find yourself entering the "Menstruation Tent" if posters were edgy and crabby and snippy, as it happened when the spamming began in earnest. (Of COURSE it was Ramsey Defense Team spam. Who else?) At the BNF it often happened that someone would compose a provocative post of 300 or 400 words or so in isolation, and then present it to the "Room." Great, lively discussion would ensue, as in a "think tank." Comments would fly LIVE and jog loose other fascinating points of view. It was a live, happening thing with impressive results. In the end the Ramseys got their way, silencing the Boulder News Forum. They're so good at snuffing out what's young and vital and true. Certainly, J-7 and JW had their share of great moments too; however, my heart belongs to the old BNF and always will. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 42. "Very touching" Posted by Ribaldone on 07:46:01 7/29/2000 This is becoming a very emotional and beautifully reminiscent thread. Which is exactly what was needed around here. I was a lurker back then, but I remember all the names that have been mentioned. My search for JonBenet was my first internet experience. As Mee Too suggested, it was so high-energy, fast-paced and lively back then (before all the RST nastiness started). It's amazing how many people became immediately "obsessed" (for lack of a better word) with finding out what happened to this beautiful little girl who was murdered in her home on Christmas Day. As long as I live, I will never forget the first time I heard about her murder on the radio the day after Christmas. It stopped me in my tracks. They announced that "six-year old Little Miss Colorado had been kidnapped from her home." The next day the paper said her father had found her body in the basement. That's when I thought, "What a minute. What's going on here. If her body was in the basement, then she wasn't kidnapped." And it went from there. There are so many loving, caring and dedicated people who want nothing more than justice for this innocent and abused baby. It makes me cry to think how many good people there are in the world, and I'm thankful for the Internet for bringing many of them together. God Bless you JonBenet. I didn't really understand at first. I remember being in chat one nite with Mrs B and G Squared and many others, and the subject turned to facelifts or something. Then I responded, one of the few times I joined in, and they teased me about trying to hawk facials....imagine. But, eeday and eedayspa is all I have ever been.....I see I didn't make the list as a BNF poster, wonder why? One of my first posts, Betsy got made at me, lol. Mostly, I read and lurk and used to hang out alot when the IRC rooms started. They were great....many long conversations with a great group I don't get to chat with nearly as often anymore. I think I know alot about "case", but can't compare to some of you scholars, I don't have a single person that I think is 100% right, it's sort of like taking pieces parts of this and put with pieces parts of that.....but I'm glad that there are those that feel strongly and put the time an energy into this case because it helps me be more aware.....that's confusing, but you get the picture. I used to post dailies on JW, Cybersleuths and Candyrose, then I became short staffed at work and have not had the time since. I have met a number of posters that I consider to be very nice folks and I am thankful I've had the opportunity to meet them. I listened to that wild and crazy couple, the Rams, watched their body language, and concluded: "They did it!" Went to a search engine and found BNF. I posted a long opinion as to how the father had molested his daughter and strangled her accidentally during a kinky sex-play session. I posted as Holmes, and Watson came on immediately to challenge me. Someone grabbed the Sherlock Holmes cap the next day, so I morphed into Miss Marple and then others as the "Hat Rustlers" (they of little brain) would grab each successive hat. When I wanted to read intelligent case discussion, I would wander over to J-7 and lurk. Thus I became Lurker XIV (since on BNF, there were already Lurkers 1 to 13!) I always enjoyed the Gem-Teague-Jeanne debates and dubbed them The Triplets. I posted a few times as "Opie" to wrangle with Ray, who always had the last word. What ever happened to him? Teague, saw your post on a daily last week, wanted to say 'HI' but it was late in the day so I figured you wouldn't see it. Great to see you are still around. To the poster who mentioned someone from 'down under' I think that was Aussie. I was travelling for the holidays when JonBenet was killed, and only got short glimpses of the TV coverage until the second week in January 97. When I got home, I immediately did a search and ended up at BNF. By then everyone was accusing everyone else of stealing hats, so I never wore one. Usually put 'Maybe' or 'What if' in the hat slot. I had some good late night discussions with a poster named Bear, I think, who claimed to be an ex-cop. Like Fra, I did enjoy using that format as a form of chat, much more relaxed and conducive to debate than regular chat rooms. I've never mastered the knack of following 10 conversations at once! The first time I logged onto BNF to see a thread title naming JonBenet a slut or whore, something like that, I stopped going there except to find Mrs. B's urls. I found J-7 just after Dan started using his second format, and I stayed. Signed up as Maggie and except for one unfortunate lapse of judgement and loss of temper I have only been Maggie. I mostly lurk now, still hoping we will one day be dabating trial tactics. I'm delighted to see many of the originals are still around to jump in if that ever happens. Back then, I thought John did it, too..... I've always been fiddler. Fiddler by name, fiddler by nature. Linda, hi! I was just wondering about you, the other day. Nikki, too. And one of my all-time favorites, BobC--someone said he still posts here occasionally, but who knows? Does anyone else remember the extended riff he did on "John Waters makes the Ramsey movie?" I printed that one out and still find it hilarious. Now EdiePratt provides most of my laughs. Also, I miss jonesy's cynical remarks, and Cassandra, YOU were Jay? I never would have guessed that! It does the heart so much good to see so many old 'faces', and hear so many memories. Meetoo, you remembered me! That was a stunner to see my name 'in lights', since I hardly ever post any more. Thank you for making my day. :-) I've never been anyone but Policedog, with a very rare exception of a couple of hats I don't even remember during some rough times at BNF, but those were not even case-related posts, so I figure they didn't count. ROFL! I found BNF in January of '97 also... my daughter had been so traumatized by the 'kidnapping' of JBR that the only news I could get without upsetting her was from the internet. She was never allowed to look over my shoulder. Heh. So I have been with you since the very start, through the PLA and Jameson episodes, through many nights in chats (that was awesome!) when I would race in from my evening swim to log in precisely on time. Oh, what a group you all are! Every single one of you have such distinct, rare and wonderful personalities. My life has been far richer for having this experience, there's no doubt about it. I wish I could name all the hats that I have been touched by, but there are far too many to name, and I would surely leave someone out if I tried. I am so glad to have seen the names of Babe and Allipat, and Panico surface on this thread, because surely each of them was very, very special in their own right, too, and a strong piece of the fabric of this experience. Even though I often have nothing to say these days, and so I rarely post, I am still here nearly every day, and you are all still part of the fabric of my life. Thank you for making it richer, and forgive me for getting mushy on you all. :-) [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 60. "Always Country Girl..." Posted by Country Girl on 16:12:49 7/29/2000 I started here at JW...have no idea when...just lurked for a long time until I got up the nerve to finally post. I heard about JBR's murder while watching OJ coverage on Geraldo. Right from the first announcement of the kidnapping, then her body found in her basement, I thought "hmmmmm". At the time of the murder I had no internet access (Hooterville didn't have a local ISP) but when we finally got one I did a search on Yahoo for JonBenet and found JusticeWatch! I am so grateful for the love and support I have found here and I hope that someday there will be true justice for JonBenet. I cannot believe that her murder will go unpunished! Posted by Shee on 19:14:25 7/29/2000 the funny thing about being me is I have always been old, and surely from the first whisper about JonBenet I have used all of my senses to follow the case and mourn her and thru her, me. I guess it was Sparky and Jonesy who called me forth because they saw my writings elsewhere and I was new to the online universe. I wrote at a forum run by time magazine, comes to mind. very few of the population there had any clue what a survivor might say. I remember Nikki's verse, and Ms R and Dan's Forum and the beginning of Maw...... I remember , good thread, such a long time we have mourned the child. I remember thinking the Grand Jury would be able to indict, or that Fleet White's words would forge a path to Truth Coming Marching in, but even as I mourn these events, I laud each of you, the dozens od folk, Chris China, Starry, and Panoco and Jan and ohhhhh please don't feel left out if I do not say your name. I get an e-mail from her every month or so and she is doing fine. Desaix disappeared long, long ago. He was a funny guy whose acid wit is missed. Anastasia became Ana, I believe, and then left the forums. I last had e-mail contact with her about a year ago. She was doing well. Steve disappeared about 2 years ago. I imagine he got fed up with the constant abuse he was subjected to by Curious/Beanie/Phoenix/etc. before that poster "died" and was subsequently kicked off these forums. I miss Steve. He was a gentle soul and, from my reading of his analyses, a good lawyer to boot. As to Ray, I would speculate he either suffered the same fate as Steve (i.e got fed up with abuse from from Curious and left) or he died. He was always in poor health. Scully liked Ray. He was a cantankerous old fart. I liked him, too. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 67. He was the salt of the earth common sense, and as comfortable as an old shoe......unpretencious.....charming in a rough and real sorta way,... a Will Rogers type. Then there was grandma who insisted that Burke did it, and wouldn't think of ever deviating from that thought. Very shortly after my first post, the forum was shut down. I was sooooo lucky to find Dan's Joshua7 forum, where the format was so user friendly, and the posters, for the most part, were civil and respectful of one another. They were having very creative and intelligent discussions. It was a treasure which I learned to appreciate more whenever I lightly lurked over at the BNF. I lurked there very little, because it was too time consuming to have to sift through all the sludge and immature, rude crappola. Started out as "Modern Mom", mostly lurking. But then one day I wrote this post about how I felt that some of the pictures we see of JonBenet feel like soft-porn and how I could see a jaded look in her eyes. Now, this is "old hat" stuff now, but boy did it kick up a firestorm back then. I believe it was Mel who came back at me with venom, saying that, for me to see sexuality in a 6 year old's pictures, obviously meant that I was PERVERTED!!! She went on to say that if I was an example of a "Modern Mom", she was sure glad she wasn't one!!Whew! That kind of left a bad taste in my mouth, so when we all had to re-register, at some point, I dropped the Modern Mom moniker and went to Sharon - who just happened to be one of the characters in a book I was reading at the time. Don't remember when I found the BNF. I was Pearlsim there. Pearlsim was a little bit sarcastic and a little bit naughty - the evil twin of the much sweeter (and not a bit perverted) Sharon. I remember having so much fun over there, being "Pontiff Pearl" and following Babe's hilarious leading. Anyone remember the Colonel Sanders/Kentucky Friend Chicken debacle?? Pontiff Pearl's stint as personal spiritual advisor to the Ramseys?? Gee....I miss BNF! Oh yea, I had one other name on the Front Porch, after finally being inducted into ladie's club.....whatever that was called. I began lurking at BNF around the 10th of January back in '97 but too shy to post (I was so in awe of all the posters who tended to post exactly my thoughts moments before I could get the courage to post.) The allure and lure of IRC chat brought me out. What fun it was! Of course Jameson's "coming out" party had to happen the weekend I was out of town... My dedication (addiction?) to the case inspired me to create an archive of news stories ( http://www.sunflower.org/~mapek ) and then organize the first get-together in Boulder in '98. What fun that was! Now I'm working with ShortyII (another real "old-timer") and a few others of you (who may or may not wish to remain anonymous) on CrimeNews2000 ( http://www.CrimeNews2000.com ). I don't get to chat too often, but always fun when I do. So great to see both new and old hats. Wishing you all the very best.
