"Way too early" Posted by starry on 03:23:56 8/03/2000 to be up. Think I'll go back to bed. We had a scare last night with my new doggie. We live in the country and have no fears of letting our little house dogs out to use the bathroom. Well, Brutus has been doing great, no accidents here (except the first afternoon, and I don't think they were accidents, if you get my drift). I was cooking dinner and there was some minor activity going on here, so no-one could recall letting Brutus & Sparky out or back in. I just happened to ask where Brutus was. We saw Sparky,(in the house) but not Brutus. He used to hide under beds at my mother's house, so we searched for him in the house in all the nooks and crannies we could think of. No where to be found. So we got in the car and started to look for him and saw him up the street watching a neighbor cut grass. It was OK for him to do that, but I was scared that he wouldn't have come back. I'm now giving him doggie treats when he comes back into the house and watching him much closer. I was lulled into a false sense of security since he had been doing so well, returning at the same time as Sparky. Well, the Buddha will be here tonight! It's so wonderful to sleep with that baby. She's soft and sweet and cuddly and smells good and warm and loveable and huggable and cute and has cute little toes and feet and....... everything! prayers & huggs, starry [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 2. "Morning, Starry" Posted by Cher on 03:41:55 8/03/2000 Starry, congratulations on the new member of your animal family. I am watching my Mitzi much more carefully, too. A week ago our jazz musician friends, Libby and Bob, lost their 11-year-old kitty, Monk (named for Thelonius Monk). Monk was the big Maine coon I sometimes talked about. He was out all night and got into a fight with "some nocturnal creature," as my friend Libby put it. A neighbor called in the morning to tell them he found Monk, dead from his injuries. I have cried a million tears over this big ole' cat's death. It just won't be the same to go to their home and not see Monk lounging around in the flower pot. It used to amuse me to no end to pull up in their drive and see a flower pot full of that big cat! Meanwhile, I am glad we were able to trap and relocate all those raccoons, as I understand from Mr. C they can be very vicious. Mitzi is no longer allowed out after dark. She's not happy about it (cats are by nature nocturnal creatures) but hey, that's "tough love." I hope I didn't bum anybody out this early in the morning with this story but if it encourages anyone to keep their kitty inside and safe for the night, it will be worth it. Cher . Posted by pinker on 03:42:27 8/03/2000 what a permissive dog owner you are to allow Brutus that activity! Was he his head tilted to the side too? Trying to figure out the purpose of lawn mowing? "morning pinker and Cher" Posted by starry on 03:52:47 8/03/2000 What I meant was, there are only 9 houses on my street and it's a dead end with lots of children and animals. Not much traffic at all, especially since I live at the end of the cul de sac. Sparky, our other, little dog, goes outside and comes back in with no problem. Brutus had been following Sparky's lead, up til then. Guess our 9 lb. "Brutus" is getting more familiar and braver now that he's been here for a few days and wanted to check out the neighbor hood. Whatever, I now know what shenaganians he's capable of and I'll try to stay one step ahead of him. Cher, sorry to hear of Monk's death. 11 years is a long time to love a pet and have it die a violent death. My sympathies. Sorry about Monk...glad Brutus is curious and safe! Wasn't impressed by Geraldo last night. Still not convinced that Geraldo is completely impressed by Abrams theory. He did indicate that while he was gone, Abrams would be filling-in for him and Abrams could discuss it further. Hmmmm. Another cloudy, dreary day with popcorn rain storms. Haven't had enough crabs or crabbing this summer. Did you get any rain last night? We had a wonderful light show, but no rain. Now I have to go water my flowers. My cats won't leave me alone long enough to do much, though. They're sleeping as close to me as possible. When my dear Smidgen was killed by "something" I never knew if it was a human, a dog, or something else) in broad daylight, I made the decision to keep my cats in all the time. More and more humane societies are recommending that. I know they love to go outside, but it's really a dangerous place for them whether you're in the city or in the country. They are also dangerous to other critters. Bird societies are warning that large populations of birds are being killed off by cats. I read somewhere that the predicted life span of an indoor cat is 20 and of an outdoor cat it is less than 1. I know it's a hard decision, but I recommend keeping your cats indoors. It also eliminates flea problems and some allergy problems, as they aren't tracking in pollens. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 14. "My man, Tim" Posted by Watching you on 06:12:48 8/03/2000 McGraw had his felony reduced to a misdemeaner for assaulting a police officer in Buffalo, NY, a couple of months ago. The County Sheriff is hopping mad, because he felt the felony should stick. That must have been some scene - everyone hyped up, my man, Tim saw his buddy Kenny being hauled off a horse, and he reacted. Of course, if Ken had been just any dude, he wouldn't have gotten his feet in the stirrups to begin with, but he was given permission to-- well, this is where it gets sticky. He says permission to ride, they say permission to sit on the horse. At any rate, it seems it was something that started out innocently and got blown out of proportion. I say, give my man Tim a break and drop the freaking charges, already. Hell, the Rams killed their kid and got away with it - Tim didn't shoot the deputy, he just sort of manhandled him a little. You don't know if I'm serious or not, do you? heh So, have a day, everyone. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 12. "Mornin' All" Posted by janab on 06:09:00 8/03/2000 Well, here I am back at work. It looks like I'm going to be busy, but I have to wait for someone else to get here and fill me in on what needs to be done. I'm sure glad that Mr. Janab is the one who takes the kids to "school" in the mornings, because I don't think I could have handled that! Luckily, little Ben will have a couple of the same teachers that his big sister had four years ago (could it really have been that long ago?). We did have some bad news while I was off of work. Just as soon as we had added a new member to our family, we lost an old one. The Dan Dog passed away just a couple of weeks after Ben was born. He is now buried in our backyard, in a spot that he picked out. Just a month or so before he died, he began laying in this one particular spot in the yard (for no apparent reason) and sometimes would not even come in the house when we called him. Mind you, this was a dog who LIVED for air conditioning. As far as he was concerned, the only reason to go outside was to relieve yourself (and not too far out in the yard, so we wouldn't have time to close the door without letting him back inside). So, we figured that was a pretty appropriate final resting place. Enough of that...it's good to be back. Teague, are you here again regularly? I saw a post or two from you and couldn't believe my eyes!! Sharon, I got the package you sent and it was wonderful! What a thoughtful person you are. BTW, your trip sounds like it was a great experience (except for the purse snatching, of course)! I hope you took some B/W pictures because I've always thought Europe would be a great place to take rolls and rolls of that! We took Ben on his first vacation two weeks ago to Big Bend National Park. That's right. We took him hiking in the canyons. He really seemed to enjoy it. It was the first hiking trip where Maggie had to actually walk instead of being carried or strollered (is that a word?) and she didn't like it very much. Too hot for her, I guess. I'm having Mr. Janab scan a picture today of Ben on his first hike. If he gets it to me this afternoon, I'll post it. BTW, what is the picture-posting site that so many of you use? I know Mame uses one, but I can't think of the name. Can anybody help me out? Okay, I'll stop rambling now. I think the easiest site to use (in my experience) was ZING! (http://www.zing.com). I know you're all missing my Sam and Jane stories. Fortunately they have just been "dogs" these days. I'm quite certain that I will have some good Jane stories when we take her in to be spayed later this month. Can you say separation anxiety? I do hope the vet is willing to sedate her. I have found the perfect solution to their nails. When we have our daily play sessions (throwing the frisbee, ball, etc.) I make sure and stand well onto the asphalt so they have to "take off" from that surface. I especially enjoyed hearing Lee Greenwood sing, God Bless the USA last night. I remember he sang it in 1988. Hubby suggested we go ourselves, but I chickened out; I figured it would be much too crowded. Please keep us informed on what you see there. Last Saturday my husband and son were in the process of remodling one of our apartments. While he was there the tenant upstairs let out an ear peircing scream, so he ran upstairs to see what could be wrong. It seems that her daughter (a beatuiful 22 year old single mom) was killed in a car accident in a town 20 miles from us. It seems that it was raining and she went through some water and the car hydro-planed. At the same time my best friend called to tell me that her in-laws were just involved in an accident and were being life flighted to a large hospital. Can you imagine our suprise that it turned out to be the same accident! The daughter is being buried today, and I am feeling so sad for my tenant. My friend's in- laws (who are in their mid 60's) were seriously hurt, but thankfully were driving a big cadillac or they might have been killed also. I hope you all have a good Thursday. Chris, my T-1 line here at work choked on that photo. Resize maybe? The lawn chair looked pretty enough, just didn't get to see the rest. The yellow leaf is some sort of virus. You should pinch them off your impatiens on a regular basis and throw them away in a trash can or somewhere where they won't fall out. Wash your hands so you don't spread it to your other plants. I have several plants (roses, one wisteria) that have viruses and this is how I've been handling it. Eventually it might go away but at least it won't get any worse. They are such a beautiful couple, inside and out. I just does my heart good to see them so happy together in their first little home. That party started at 8:30. I had dinner with two of my dearest friends with whom I have celebrated birthdays for 25 yrs. Yep, as you might imagine, they are getting pretty old by now, this one was celebrating her big 50!...Think I should look for some younger friends? heh! Naw! We still just have the best ole time and are totally invested in each other's stories. Slept in a bit and now am preparing to write bills before I pack. My daughter and I are taking off early Friday morning to go to Indiana. Her fiancee's family and extended family and friends are giving her a bridal shower in one little town, and then a family weekend at his parents home on a lake, with the whole tribe there to meet us and to go boating, picnicing and whatever we are up to! They just insisted we come to meet everyone and sent all sorts of greetings, e-mails and even the airline tickets for us to come. Have met his parents several times and they are delightful...hope I hold up with all the excitement though! Should be fun.... See yous guys Monday evening. And Colorado Babe, all I can say, is that it sounds like you are "on the loose and hunting for trouble!" Hanging out first with that Republican crowd, and then the wild bunch from JW at the casinos (the stories I could tell you about those people!)....all I am saying here is don't call me from jail asking for bail! At first he was my favorite, but then I got tired of his not doing anything and bragging about it. He was sure he was going to get by on personality. My money has always been on Susan. My next door neighbor has an outdoor cat. She was telling me yesterday that he brings home baby rattlesnakes, bunnies, and of course, many, many birds. I just can't think that's a good thing for anybody. Chris, Sam is beautiful. I love German Shepherds. Of course, I love all dogs, but GS's are special. I think we are even for the drought conditions now. Roofers are trampling overhead. They say they are going to work thru the rain because they have to catch up on their work. Oy, now in addition to worrying about them falling off my roof, I have to worry about one of them getting struck by lightning, here in the lightning capital! I checked the radar and there is a very small cell right over Melbourne, so it should pass. Pinker, are you Floridian too? I see you as two of our "spiritual" leaders (your sweetness and kindness always show). I know there are other sweet souls here I'm not thinking of now. As a newbie, I don't want to start a new thread. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 30. "Needlepoint Grannies" Posted by Chris on 11:52:53 8/03/2000 Stolen Stitches Online Rock Needlepoint World By Jill Serjeant LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A stitch in time used to save nine. But bands of underground grannies have started stealing stitches online, rocking the genteel world of needlepoint and threatening to tie the industry in knots. Their numbers are probably in the hundreds rather than the millions that make up the Napster song-sharing community on the Web. Yet the pattern publishing and needlepoint industry is so alarmed at the mostly elderly cross-stitch pirates who swap copyright patterns for free via the Internet that they are threatening to take legal action. ``This strikes at the heart of the needlepoint industry. The people who are doing this seem to have a hacker's mentality,'' said Jo Weiss, executive secretary of the International Needleart Retailers Guild. ``When we found out about it in July, we couldn't help but compare it to the music industry and what is happening there ... If necessary, we will show them that we mean business,'' Weiss said. Using just a PC, a digital scanner and an Internet chat room, a group of ladies discovered they could reproduce the charts filled with hundreds of tiny squares that serve as patterns for cross-stitch designs and pass on the grid to the computer of a friend. The technology was not only quick but inexpensive, saving hobbyists anything from $3 to $12 a time for patterns ranging from intricate floral designs to dogs and angels. The women call it sharing, comparing it to swapping recipes taken from cookbooks or passing around novels. But when they advertised their skills on various Web sites, needlework shops started to see sales fall. ``I found there are about 11 groups, some of them with several hundred members. I signed up to one such group and within a few days I got sent so many charts that I couldn't download my e-mail,'' said Jim Hedgepath, president of South Carolina pattern designers Pegasus Originals who is spearheading the crackdown. ``It is hurting the designers and it is hurting the store owners. It has gotten to be a big enough problem that we are having to take action because the industry has gotten smaller every year and we are at a point where we could be knocked off by something like this,'' he said. The industry, which has seen some 75 percent of its mom and pop stores go out of business since the 1980s, launched a legal fighting fund after its annual trade show last month. Hedgepath has also written to several of the Web servers that host the offending e-mail groups pointing out the copyright infringement and succeeding in getting some of them closed down. Other have simply changed names and gone underground, admitting new members only through personal recommendation. ``Some of the groups are shutting down for fear of getting caught and I think lots of the ladies didn't realize they were doing anything wrong. But there are a few bad eggs out there,'' said Hedgepath. He dismisses as ``baloney'' justification by the pirates that they have to travel long distances to buy the patterns at needlework shops. ``There are plenty of places you can go to on the Internet and legitimately download free stuff,'' he said, citing the proliferation of sites run by craft magazines and official needlepoint organizations. Hedgepath and Weiss say they will take legal action only as a last resort. But some lawyers question the wisdom of taking expensive legal action against a group of mostly elderly, not very rich women. ``Just filing an initial complaint and getting an injunction can cost tens of thousands of dollars,'' said Los Angeles business and copyright lawyer Robert Enders. ``Every time there is a new technology, it opens up fears of people losing out, and then it settles in and people find they can usually make more money doing something else,'' he said. She's such a small thing herself it's hard to imagine. I bet she's much more comfortable now... anyone want a kitten? We live in the country. Racoons, hawks, coyotes, and even opossoms, kill cats. We had a neighbor who's 16 lb tom was snatched up by an owl. They were on their back patio, and the cat was on the roof of it at dusk, right before their eyes he was taken! Talk about shock. My guys hang out in the "dogs" yard, so no worries about them getting taken by an "unfriendly". My wolf hybrid is very protective of his feline friends. If I didn't have those darned dogs, I'd use one of those kennels you can get (you know the chain link type) from Home Depot and modify it. That way they could be outside, but safe. Lost my Rufus in May. He had liver cancer from the preservative they used to use in dog food to keep the fat from becoming rancid. Have your dogs checked! Supposedly they don't use it anymore, can't remember the name. Ethelox-something or other. Sorry to hear about all the losses. I know what that's like. Next week is an aniversary for me. Suffered a great loss last year at this time, so if I'm not around, be patient, once I pull myself back together I'll be back. Hey, everyone, I have a good brainstorm question to ask. Every year a local radio station has a dress up your pet for halloween contest. I'd like to start thinking now of a fun costume for one of the "girls" - I think Jane would be more tolerant. She allows Z to put his robe and gloves on her. Any fun ideas? You can get the feather stuff at Michaels. By the way, Pet Smart has contests too. My Sabrina won 1st place a few years ago and Mommy got a $25 gift certificate. You might want to check out Pet Smart and enter the two! Oh, Sabrina was a ballerina (topless) with a pink tulle tutu skirt and a pink tiara!! I think this was before I knew all about tiaras. Driving to work yesterday I saw a very sad sight. Three racoon youngins' dead together in the middle of the road in a single file. It broke my heart. You know Mama coon was in the brush nearby grieving. I see so much roadkill on the rustic roads of Wisconsin, it's very disturbing. I wish there was something that could be done. 2. We grew up with a weekend beach house in 'Michiana'. Being city folks it was hoot to invite the racoons over for evening trysts of leftover dinner. It was quite a show they put on with their little hands and very impressive for guests. We even had a special set of dishes just for the racoons.(really just two old plates we decided never to use again once the coons used them) Well, now Papa pinker has retired to permenantly live there and the coons are a problem. We can't seem to undo the invitation. Seems the critters show up at dusk continually looking for a handout. The garbage must now be put out to quickly coincide with the trash pick up least there be a big mess. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 43. "China and Pedro" Posted by Baybb on 16:35:28 8/03/2000 China and Pedro have left now. Boo Hoo I Pleaded with them to stay longer but no, they had to go. I tried bribing. Ha! Pedro said "How much?" I didn't have enough. I tried begging, China said "My dog begs better than that". I said I would cook for them, they both broke out into gales of laughter, so I said I could take them out to eat. I said I would clean for them, with that they asked why didn't I do it for myself. I said "What, do you think I am crazy?" With that, finally they both agreed with me and I was happy at last, but they still left, laughing all the way to the car. What do you think I did wrong? I gave Pedro something to keep him warm at night and told China she needed to depend on Pedro, not me, to keep her warm. All in all, I am one happy camper. We had a good visit and I got breakfast cooked for me. I have to confess that I pulled a SnowWolf tho and Somehow I had run out of coffee, only had enough for one pot and DeCaf at that. I don't think China likes DeCaf. She sure laughs a lot. :-) [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 46.
