"FT" Posted by Bets on 08:15:07 8/08/2001 I just saw your list of most popular names on yesterday's thread. Here's the wierd thing. For many years I wanted to have a daughter named Sarah but when I was pregnant with my oldest child, hubby's brother told me, in no uncertain terms, that Sarah was a name he already had designated for his future daughter. (Keep in mind he wasn't even married when he was making this statement.) So, I caved and starting researching other family names. Came up with a pioneer great-great-great grandma named Emily and fell in love with that name. Coupled it with another family name from hubby's side and ended up with what I consider to be the very pretty combination of Emily Helen. My Emily will be 17 in November. When she was born and I revealed her name, all people could say was how unusual and old-fashioned it sounded. But guess what?? I must have personally started that Emily trend because within a few short years, EVERYONE was naming their little girls Emily. That's probably the first and only time I'll ever be a trendsetter! Fortunately, my Emily loves her name - and it fits her perfectly. (And, as an interesting side-note - the opinionated brother-in-law who forbade me to use the name Sarah, went on to name his only daughter Madison!) Because she attends a christian school I wanted to stay away from Bible names....so far there are 2 Davids, two Johnathans, two Sarahs in her class. Our stockbroker loved Emily's name so much that she named her first daughter Emily Rose. We have so many nicknames for her...Em..Emy..Roses..and she answers to all of them. So far at school she has been the only Emily in her class. I was suprised to see the name Emily come in at #2. It is such a pretty name. Posted by Voyager on 11:14:56 8/08/2001 That was such fun yesterday playing the name guessing game and all the related joshing and stories that came out of it! FT thanks for that 100 most favorite names site....off of that site, I also bookmarked a neat maternity clothing site, a baby clothing and accessories site, and one to help prepare the new father for the birthing and bonding with his baby! I will show these to Liz when she comes up to visit today....I ordered her some new maternity dresses, as she is blossoming! She is going to try them on, and then I am going to have her put her feet up while I make her a nice lunch....She is such a sweetie, we are so lucky to have her....she will make a great little mom! We are also going to do some planning for this weekend for an exciting ballooning adventure in which our whole family is going to participate.... We have been invited to participate in the first annual Acoma Balloon Fiesta ....this first one, only 40 balloon pilots have been invited and Mr. Voyager is just thrilled to be included... The Acoma Indian tribe and reservation is about an hour west of our city between here and Gallup....it is high flat desert with Giant rock formations and rock plateaus rising suddenly out of the desert floor at odd intervals....Extremly scenic and geologically interesting scenery.... The most exciting thing about this particular event is that the tribe is going to allow our balloons to fly over the ancient city (constantly inhabited since 650 AD) at dawn on the feast day of San Lorenzo when they will be celebrating with sacred tribal ceremonies.... A friend of ours who is a long time balloonist and who owns a balloon company, has flown over the ancient city at dawn once before and says it is absolutely mystical..... Anyway when we told V. Jr. and Liz and Scoop and Mr. Scoop about it, they all really got excited....V. and Liz about the land and the Scoops about photographing it from the air.... Mr. Voyager and I took a tour of the old city by ground last Sunday and scouted the sorrounding land for launching and landing sites.... The Indian guides take take the tourists, on a narrow, steep road, in a very small tour bus, to the top of a sheer rock plateu which stands completely alone on this mesa with the ancient city built on the top, fortress like, you just can hardly believe what you are seeing.... The tourist are given a tour of the ancient village and of some of the remodeled versions right aside them, as well as the old Spanish church built after the Indians were converted, while they are also given the oportunity to purchase Indian fry bread, and beautiful handmade pottery while chatting with the Indian artists, who are standing in front of the most beautiful thousand mile view of desert and mountain at the edge of the cliff....Very dramatic and enchanting.... Anyway we will be taking our family and a crew of four more, for a two day flying event....the Scoops could only get away for the first day, but the rest of us will stay two... Our accomodations are at a brand new Indian hotel and cassino owned by the same tribe, are about 8 mi. from the launch site near the ancient city....so we will be very comfortable and may even leave a few dollars at the table if we get in early enough.... It seems that there is now an Indian cassino on every mesa these days which is kind of annoying and distracts from the landscape....however, traveling through the small reservation town of Acomita last Sunday, we noticed that that casino money has built a new school, a new housing developement, and a new community center and fire station....it is hard to begrudge these people any good fortune after the poverty and hardships of the centuries.... Mr. Voyager also called an acquanitance from business, an ex-lutenient governor of the Acoma tribe, who is going to be our guide for the weekend while he and his two sons join our balloon crew....This begins to sound like a real adventure! Anyway, Liz and I will be planning the strategy details of transportation, and beverages, and food and stuff to make it a successful weekend... Luckily Mr. V. and I were able to talk the administrator at the visitor center into issuing all of our photo passes in advance....they are very strict about this....we will find out all the other rules, regulations, and traditions at a meet and greet party on Friday night....we want to be good guests so that we get invited back! Will log on Monday and tell you guys all about our Acoma Ballooning adventure in Indian Country...... Nice to see Cher is back, though upside down! And Gemini, good luck in starting down the aisle with the wedding plans...If I can be of any help just let me know... Bets have a great vacation...sounds wonderful! My sister called from their new home on Kauai last week and said, "Come on over, the water is great!" She takes her little grandson (2)swimming in the ocean 3 times a week after she gets aways from work! How great is that?! She put him on the phone, and he told me that he and MawMaw were going swimming in the "lotion"! I am dying to get over there, so let us know how the water is, and Bet's do look out for Sharks! Posted by Ayeka on 11:00:08 8/08/2001 I burst out laughing so hard when I read that about Blue! My cats are nowhere near THAT clever! I was bathed in cats at the bus stop this morning, a ginger tabby and a grey tabby kitten. The kitten kept trying to leap up onto my sweater, and I was standing! They were sweet though. I found out yesterday that another application I sent to another state job in Mid-July is still in the pre-interview stage (as in, the relevant players are all in staggered stages of vacation and can't seem to be in the same building at one time to coordinate interviews -- blasted summer!). And they DEFINITELY have the application; the woman on the phone found it in the folder. So, I hopehopehope that they call me....! The pay is 2x the pay of the job I didn't get. Baby names: I have heard two important tests for choosing baby names. The "back porch test": Stand on the back porch and scream that name for five minutes straight. If you can still stand it, it's probably ok. The "presidential/supreme court justice test": If you can say "President / Supreme Court Justice [baby name] [family name]" and not die laughing, it's probably ok. (I mean, can you imagine President Muffy? I thought not.) Here's hoping today brings better things... Ayeka [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 17. "Ayeka and everyone" Posted by Seeker on 11:28:52 8/08/2001 It's going to be 106 here again today! It's pretty bad when you look forward to 98 as a cool down... Yeah, that Blue is something, and the worst part is that he knows it! My mom kept telling me I was "humanizing" him when I would tell her about him. Then she came to visit and had the "experience" that I call Blue. The night before she was to go back home he decided to stay out all night. The next morning as I'm trucking her bags out to the truck and she's walking down the walkway, she tells me how she kept getting up all night long and looking for him with a flashlight! She was worried because we live in coyote country, as well as bobcats, skunks, oppossums, bears, mountain lions, and just about everything else including neighborhood escapee's (dogs). Well I turned around and there he sits, just behind her looking very smug and satisified with himself (she had stopped to tell me that she thought something "horrible" had happened to him) on the walkway. I told her, "he's fine Mom, in fact he's right behind you", then she turns and tells him, "You little shit! You had grandma worried to death!" I laughed so hard I could have peed my pants! I was "huminizing" him, but she's grandma? I'll never forget that morning! LOL!!! His newest endever? He decides he wants to stay out overnight and hides. He's so dark he looks like a shadow and has taken to getting up on the top of my car and laying down because he knows I'm looking everywhere on the ground for him! Smart @ss cat! Bright Blessings to all! Ayeka, I told you yesterday... [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 19. "I love the animal stories" Posted by Mini on 11:50:08 8/08/2001 Years ago I went to a conference where a scientist talked about how animals were incapable of real thought and planning. What bunk--just ask any pet owner. Yesterday, my younger pup found a bone outside and was lying on the grass chewing on it. His older sister (and alpha dog) desperately wanted it but didn't try to take it away from him. She sat in front of him and whined but to no avail--he ignored her. Finally, she got up and got one of his stuffed "babies" (which she has no interest in) and started prancing around the grass with it in her mouth then came over and dropped it in front of him. The second he reached to get it, she grabbed the bone and took off. Sparky, (I think it was you) what happened to the pup you found abandoned? I hear the heatwave is headed east--you all take it easy. This is usually the coldest part of the country but I think it'll hit the 80's today. The first one she named Zachary--finding out later that that was the number one boy's name for that year. The second one she named Jake--again, finding out later that that was the number one boy's name for that year. Sometimes, you just can't win. Seeker, meant to tell you yesterday ... hubby and I both got a tremendous kick out of your cat pix. Both are beautiful; Blue is something really special : ). Do you remember that web site I mentioned to you and Ayeka on the old TFP thread? The one you already knew about? MrG says they have wonderful cat pictures there and you should add yours. Ayeka, I don't know whether you use this site, but you've inspired me to shop for new garb and I ordered their catalog. Very neat stuff here. http://www.renstore.com/cgi-bin/renstore.storefront [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 32. "Oh Gem..." Posted by Seeker on 15:57:07 8/08/2001 there are 3 cats at home. Look again at the bed picture to see my shy guy... My co-worker just brought in the most adorable puppy! He is just soooooo cute! Little terrier mix, looks like a baby Benji type. They named him "Smokey". I have a special Labor Day weekend planned this year. A small contingent of us are going to the Bodie State Historic Park for a ghost hunt. I hope to get more ghost photo's for the website soon! You can see the ones I have already by either going to my homepage and clicking on the specture http://www.geocities.com/ranchhaven or going directly to the page http://www.geocities.com/ranchhaven/ghosts.html Later... Posted by Dunvegan on 17:09:41 8/08/2001 Hope your pictures capture the "spirits" of the place. Make sure you have an extra good set of shock absorbers on your vehicle: the last mile or so to Bode is usually rutty and washed out and a real bone rattler. If you manage a solo portrait of himself, let us know so we can browse your cat pictures again. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 35. "Gem and Janab" Posted by JR on 18:19:51 8/08/2001 Gem - unfortunately we all hit plateaus but I have the most success in breaking one by "cheating." When I diet, about once a week or every 10 days I will eat something I really want (cheeseburger, choc. cake or some other off-limits food) and that seems to "shock" my body into a new cycle. Janab - glad you are laughing. Seriously, I have called Louke that name from the day we got news the baby was definitely a boy (after the ultrasound.) All 4 have nick names which tie into their behavior or personality from this granny's point of view. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 36. "Thanks for the tip, JR" Posted by Gemini on 20:00:05 8/08/2001 NOTE: This message was last edited 20:00:05, 8/08/2001 I'm certainly willing to give it a try ... especially what with just posting on TFP about lemon meringue pie and such : ). Bout time I had a treat. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] ARCHIVE REMOVE
