My neighbor is a physician who is taking a year off with a new baby. The other child is about 6. Anyway, he got a hold of his dad's stun gun and zapped Madison in the butt with it. She DID NOT scream, she simply dropped like a rock (according to the mother). She (the mom) called me, Madison was not completely unconscious but absolutely out of it for about 10 minutes. She weighs 65 lbs. Those are the marks that were left through her shorts, I think, cause it could have been bare skin where it was located if she was bent over. There was no mark on the shorts. The stun gun was a Stunmaster and the heads were not square but if you look at the mark on the left, it is not round either like you'd expect it to be, it is more rectangular. I only had the vid cam to take the photo with so it's the best shot I could I could get. The mom is an M.D. so we saw no reason to call a doctor or 911, she kept check on Madison's vitals and they were fine. Madison says it does not hurt. Though it may have at the time, she doesn't "member". This was just a fluke accident (thank God there were no loaded guns in the house) and she did not know her husband had left it within the child's reach. No harm, no foul but this is what a stun mark looks like on a child taken within a few moments (about 10) of a single discharge from a stun gun with rounded prongs. Incredible. Now, for those of you who would ask, no, I do not think this mother was negligent, and no I do not intend to do anything about it. The stun gun is locked up safe and she tended to her son over playing with it. Madison is unharmed. "Oh My God " Posted by Sweebie on Aug-11-00 at 03:44 PM (EST) LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-00 AT 03:57 PM (EST) Dixie, I really don't know what to say. The most important thing is that I am so so so sorry for poor Madison. I guess the second thing would be, unless that neighbor is a pediatrician or an ER physician, I think I would call someone ANYWAY just to make sure that she is alright. Couldn't hurt. And lastly, well, it's your business what to do about the situation, and I am not trying to tend to it, BUT - leaving a stun gun out where a child can get it is a SERIOUS lapse of judgment, IMO. I hope you are forever cognizant of that in the future, when Madison is there. And Dixie, I think you should remove those pix of Madison's marks. JMO edited to add: I called my city's Police Dept and asked if something like this should be reported. They said yes. Just thought I would let you know. I don't know if it is illegal NOT to report it, but that is what they said. He wasn't the talkative type, and I told him it was another child that did it, but that is what he said. "It's OK not to report it" Posted by Dixie on Aug-11-00 at 04:03 PM (EST) LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-00 AT 04:21 PM (EST) Unless it is used in a crime, there is no reason to report it, it did no harm. It did less harm than if he had smacked her with one of his toys. Besides, I wouldn't cause my neighbors that type of grief. Had she been harmed and the neighbor not been a physician or not called me immediately, I might have felt differently, but out here, there is no reason to report anything that does not produce an injury. I asked my other neighbor who is a cop and he informed me of the above. His reason is that it is not considered in any way a lethal weapon and is certainly less likely to have caused her harm than had the child injured her with a toy, which is apparently true cause she's just fine. Posted by Sparrow on Aug-11-00 at 04:20 PM (EST) I feel terribly sorry for your child. If she were mine I would get up now from my computer and get her to the emergency room. In fact, my child would have been taken immediately. Checking vital signs by a pediatrician? Sheesh. Please get your child to the hospital. Now. I agree with Sweebie. Posting those pics are in very poor taste IMO. [REMOVE] [ALERT] [EDIT] [SEND EMAIL] [USER PROFILE] [REPLY] [REPLY WITH QUOTE] [TOP] 5 . "Sparrow, thanks for your opinion" Posted by Dixie on Aug-11-00 at 04:30 PM (EST) The doctor who was with her is a very fine Ped who worked for years (until the birth of her last baby) in the ER right down the road. Madison's vitals were fine. Had she been in the slightest danger, I would have taken her in immediately. I am a bit appalled at your post as you seem to imply I am a bad mother or something, I assure you, I'm one heck of a good, attentive mother. To imply otherwise is unfounded and inappropriate. Madison had an accident, period. It did less harm than when she falls down on her roller skates or when the other neighbor kid batted her in the head instead of hitting the ball on the T-Ball stick and I didn't report those people either. Kids have accidents. She was under medical care from the get go. I removed the url and sent it to Jams. Lou Smit does need to see it. And Sparrow, I am absolutely not interested in what you view as "poor taste". I posted it for comparison and to perhaps serve as a warning to other parents that these things are in homes and parents should be put on notice that accidents do happen. And she's NOT your child. She is mine and I am best qualified to determine whether or not she is getting appropriate care. The one-on-one care of a physician with about 15 years of ER experience is, in my opinion, very good care. Had I taken her to an emergency room, she would have sat around in the waiting room. I made the correct decision to see that my child was in the care of a doctor at all times, not sitting around in some darn waiting room. I am horrified at the very strong accusations by Sparrow that I am less than a good mother. You do not have a right to take pot shots at me and I'm just not going to tolerate it. Dixie
