"odd tie to mystery story" Posted by Cher on 23:32:43 8/13/2000 I just posted my recipe for Sizzling Goat Cheese Salad on the Lacey's Recipe Thread at Front Porch. Szundi, what a cool thing to do--to use your winnings at the casino to buy a first-class ticket to the wedding at the Voyagers! I was updating myself on some true crime stories when I came across this: http://abcnews.go.com/onair/ GoodMorningAmerica/gma000615MissingEditor.html This is the story about the missing NYC Frommer's editor, Claudia Kirschhoch. She went to Jamaica on a trip with some other travel writers and has not been seen since. Her parents are searching for her but so far it's been to no avail. I was so surprised, however, as I got about 3/4 of the way through the article and saw the person she was with, Tanya, was an old friend of mine from about 15 years ago. Small world. Cher . Your recipe looks absolutely wonderful. I am definitely going to try that sometime soon. Finally turned off the AC and actually had to put a robe on this morning. What happened to summer? I think we only had one day in July that was 90+. Cool and rainy still. My little Brutus has taken to sleeping with me and even though we have a king size bed he lays right in between me and Mr. starry, not all cuddled up, but with his legs stretched out. Instead of taking up the 5 or 6 inches he would take if he cuddled, he takes over a foot of the bed. This morning I rolled over this morning very carefully so as not to disturb him and hit my funny bone on my night stand. Ouch,,,,, and he wasn't too happy about it, either, when I yelled in pain. It's a brand new week so ya'all have a great one. There will be Justice for JonBenét. huggs, starry [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 4. Posted by Chris on 07:18:01 8/14/2000 I'll be back, but I did want to make one comment to Robin at CS: Please tell me who is paying for this forum if it isn't me because someone is getting paid twice. I get (and pay) the bills for this forum every month and sometimes those costs are offset by the generous donations of members of this community. Misty wasn't "banned" because she wanted to bring Turvey or Ressler to JW. Misty was deactivated because she pissed me off. During a particularly heavy use of bandwidth, when I was scrambling to figure out how to handle it (the forum was private) and she was spending a fair amount of time bashing Justice Watch at other forums while sucking up my bandwidth and never contributing anything to the discussion at Justice Watch. If you're going to take and take and take from someone, at least have the courtesy to be quiet about it. So, maybe those weren't sound reasons and maybe that wasn't the right way to handle it but it's water under the bridge. I also didn't delete the Dixie thread. There are other moderators on this forum. I've been thinking...maybe we need a JBR sideshow forum. There you can discussion things that aren't really about the JonBenet Ramsey case but might be related to it by chance. Of course, there will be critics (Why did my thread get moved? etc.). Let me know if that's what you want because it will take about 5 minutes to set up. Of course, we'll need a moderator! [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 8. You see the rain coming and think maybe, just maybe, that will cool things off. It rains (those huge raindrops) for about five minutes and then you can't even breathe because there is so much steam around. Yuck! Voyager, I was so glad to hear that you were "falling in love" on Friday! Chris, did you get a beginner CD, too? I...just had a regular weekend. We got a new couch delivered and broke it in. Whyever would you think that, sparks, just because I have a thing about brown eggs. When we were little darlings, my grandma used to have brown eggs from her chickens. I have no idea why I always thought brown eggs were inferior to white eggs. I'm not even prejudiced, fercripesake. There was just something about the brown shell as opposed to the pristine white egg - maybe because white symbolizes purity? How the H do I know, sparks? Ask me all these dumb questions - I don't know why I'm prejudiced against brown eggs, something must have happened to me in my childhood that damaged the brain cells that deal with eggs. And, double-yolked eggs? They really turn me off. I need Egglands Best - pristine white single-yolked eggs. I think someone told me once that brown eggs are inferior to white eggs. I'm not kidding - I have that rememberance. I've never been able to choke down a brown egg. Two of my kids can't eat eggs at all - they make them sick. Reading these posts of course for their educational value. P.S. I too like brown eggs! Mr. Voyager brought home a whole dozen eggs from a gentleman who crews for his instructors balloon. He lives in the country and keeps chickens The shells were a beautiful range of pastels....peach, pink, greens, and blues....then there were two large spotted eggs....I think these were from geese...I was going to puncture and blow them for Christmas tree ornaments, but it was right before my Baltimore treatments, so gave them to my son who said they were fabulous and fresh! "Sparky" Posted by Teague on 10:17:36 8/14/2000 Oh yes, I am there whicha baby on those PETA freaks. I read their major game plan re pet dogs some years back in "Dog World"--they want no more breeding of dogs, period, and their goal is to have all dogs out in the woods "free" of mankind. Tell that to my SFT when he's snuggling under the covers on a cold night. These are also the people who have gone around to dog shows opening crates to let the dogs "free" (to get hit on nearby highways, I suppose). Sure hope all the animal lovers on the forum know the difference between animal welfare groups and animal rights groups. The animal rights people can be very slick in their mailings asking for donations. Makes it look like you're just giving money to help these poor little kitties and puppies. NOT. P.S. There is an advertising banner that's about an inch high that you can "dock" at the top or bottom of your screen, but it doesn't interfere at all with what you see on the screen. You also have to click on messages that say things like "We haven't detected any activity on your part in the last 30 minutes. If you don't click on OK, you will be disconnected in 30 seconds." (I have discovered that they don't consider the reading the forum as activity.) You will also occasionally be asked to click on the advertising banner and visit one of their sponsors, but it opens in a new window and you can just close it as soon as you open it and then get on with your surfing. And....it's FREE, FREE, FREE. We used to pay $20 a month for EarthLink and we have had less trouble with NetZero than we ever did with EarthLink!! . janab There's roosters laying chickens and chickens laying eggs and farm machinery eating people's arms and legs. "I don't have any chickens, but" Posted by Cassandra on 10:59:29 8/14/2000 there are six herons strolling around my backyard. Some even settled onto the grass and spread their big white wings to the sun. They were playing around on the same part of the lake bank where the iguanas and banded coots live, and where the big mama turtle came out to lay her eggs. Maybe the seagrape tree attracts them. I just know that they are an endless delight to watch. Funny thing, I can stand outside and water plants and not bother them, but they must feel the camera from inside the glass, because they get edgy when I try to photograph them. You guys are making me hungry. Mr C made me the best cheese eggs I ever had in my life for breakfast yesterday. Served them with mango. Yum. Off to make cheese eggs! I have a big blue heron living in my creek in the backyard. He's pretty swell, but I'm starting to wonder if he's also the one robbing my lilypond of koi. Could be a raccoon, though, or some neighborhood cats. I have yet to catch anyone in the act. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 43. "Egg trivia" Posted by FT on 11:43:40 8/14/2000 From the Egg Nutrition Center ... "White shelled eggs are produced by hens with white feathers and ear lobes. Brown shelled eggs are produced by hens with red feathers and red ear lobes. There is no difference in taste or nutrition between white and brown eggs." And ... "To produce one egg, it takes a hen 24-26 hours, and to do so, she requires 5 oz. of food and 10 oz. of water. Thirty minutes later she starts all over again." And I thought you'd like to know ... "The entire month of May has been declared 'National Egg Month.' This is the time of the year to celebrate the many benefits of the egg." http://www.enc-online.org/trivia.htm [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 44. "FT" Posted by 1000Sparks on 11:59:56 8/14/2000 For your information, I don't have any red chickens! I've got white, gray speckled, black speckled, solid gray, and solid black. Which one is laying the brown egg? I thinks it's Erma or Mabel but not sure. And Mr. Sparks said the brown where the best, so there! Now ducks are a totally different story. "Coi snatchers" Posted by DrTee on 12:49:23 8/14/2000 NOTE: This message was last edited 12:49:23, 8/14/2000 Yep, one time I was watching a blue heron across the street from my boyfriend's (now EX) house. We both had our binoculars and were in awe of this creature who had been there for several days. All the sudden he dipped his head down in their pond as if to take a drink and up comes his head with a big gold fish in his mouth. Gulp. Bet those neighbors wondered what had happened to their fish. Anyway, the heron left a couple of days later, no doubt after the pond was empty. Oh, and thanks janab. I'll check it out. I thought zero was just free email. Save them for me pretty pleeeze. My retirement fantasy is to open a restaurant called 'The Revolving House of Egg Foo Young'. I have a really cool spinning sign already designed. If your living in rural WI chances are you have an extra outbuilding that would provide perfect storage. It's okay if the roof leaks at least the eggs will be clean. I am also looking for chinese recipies with cheese. Was that your farmhouse I passed yesterday that had the FREE EGGS sign out front? What was that on the other side about the free baby goats? Just kidding. In the Philipines fertile eggs - embryo chicks are sold on the street as a snack product. Peel and eat no cooking needed. I think they think they're like whole wheat eggs or something. You know, I was watching Designing Women the other night and it hit me, Sparks...you remind me of Bernice! Of course I can only go by your posts. I love her sense of humor, I crack up in anticipation before she ever says a word. WY, where have you been??? Glad you're back, (I can be nice on the daily, right?). I miss Nikki's prose too. She said good-bye a while back, was it supposed to be for good? Hi Erica and Sherry. Lacey, lmao, "turds." Florida, you have mail. Janab, no chit about the rain and it's deceiving results. It's hot as hell here today, could fry Sparky's eggs on the sidewalk. We had a 69 year old woman killed right in front of the mall here last Friday. Three men tried to take her purse and she resisted and they shot her in the neck and in the chest. This is Houston, so you are conditioned to this kind of news on a daily basis. However, today on a radio talk show I listen to the host mentioned that he knew the woman. He had gone to school and graduated with her son and they are still friends to this day. He spoke a little bit about her life. She graduated high school at 15. She was voted "most beautiful" in her class. She went to Journalism school and wrote for a local newspaper for years which won her many awards. She became an entrepreneur and then moved to New York to head an Investment Company. She retired and moved back to Houston in 1991. For the past 9 years she wrote freelance for various publications and retired again this year. She was at the mall buying clothes, etc., to take a trip abroad with her best friend of 25 years. I didn't know this woman but I cried while stuck in traffic. The three men were caught Satuday morning. They are being charged with Capital murder. The host of the radio show said he wished Woody Harelson and all the opponents of the death penalty would have been at this woman's funeral today with all her family and friends instead of 12 years from now when all their appeals are exhausted and they are about to face execution. BTW, in their mug shots which were shown on TV, two of them were smiling. Sorry to be a bummer, but this really made me think. I hate that I am so immuned to all the violence I hear about on a daily basis. V. "Of Human Interest" Posted by Lacey on 19:17:46 8/14/2000 v_p, I am stunned by your graphic, emotional description of this horrible crime. Thanks for capturing this. The host of the radio show said he wished Woody Harelson and all the opponents of the death penalty would have been at this woman's funeral today with all her family and friends instead of 12 years from now when all their appeals are exhausted and they are about to face execution. Best argument in support of the death penalty that I've heard, I'm serious. It's The System that drags it out and blurs the memory and makes sympathizers out of clueless celebs of ilk in search of a cause. Not just celebrities, I guess, but I do get sick of seeing Woody H. preaching pardon whilst promoting the plight of the poor perp. Gimme a break. Let's don't forget what they did, regardless of when they did it. It's The System that gives them reprieve, but eventually they all reap what they sow. Especially if they live in a death penalty state. Oh, 'scuse me, am I up on my soapbox? And to think all's I wanted to do was tell Chris that her egg post was eggstraordinarily mediyolker. Am I spelling that right? Lace . [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] ARCHIVE REMOVE
