"Friends for JonBenet?" Posted by JR on 02:22:52 8/17/2001 Criminy posted on CS that the Friends For JonBenet organization had changed. Yep. It has. Wonder who came up with this classic statement: "Today in America and many societies, it is not. In America, by our laws, we have demonstrated that we care more about our money than we do about our children." Also wonder who priced the only two books listed on the sight. DOI $30.00 and JonBenet's Mother $20.00. Save yourself some money folks, you can get them both at www.booksamillion.com for $23.79. I must have missed the statement that the additional $26.21 goes to their favorite charity. "it's" "its" ranks right up there with WHO, WHOM, NETHER, NITHER, FURTHER FARTHER, ETC, ETC, ETC. They didn't teach me the finer points of grammar, spelling, or punctuation in the second grade and I wasn't lucky enough to make it any further or farther but I have tried my darndest(sp) to make up for lost time over the years. My late entry into the art of written communication has indeed been a very big problem. As I have said so many time........."THANK GOD FOR MRS. KING", WHO IS THE FINEST GRAMMARIAN AND COMMUNICATOR, WHETHER SPOKEN OR WRITTEN, IN THE WORLD. BESIDES, WE LOVE EACH OTHER, PLATONICALLY OF COURSE. She tells me to do it the best way I know how and if people want to hone in on such trivialities, I sould let them wallow in their superiority complex. Now Mini, I love you and you know it but I godda say, "don't go there any more". If the communication contains the aformentioned words and you know exactly what the writer is conveying and they are used in proper context, what good does it do for you to bring it to their attention. If you were in a classroon situation, that would be different. Love you just the same, even though Caldonia ain't yo name. It's and its have two entirely different meanings and can change the entire context of a sentence. Poor grammar might not be important to you but it is to many people. They really need a proofreader. I know exactly what you mean but I also know that you would have been more grammatically correct to have said "meaning" and not "context" because in your response, "meaning" is the proper word to use and not "context". I would never ever correct you on your choice of words as long as I know what you are talking about. Thanks anyway, but don't be offended if I take a pass on your response. Tsk Tsk. "Elle, my friend" Posted by Mini on 17:47:12 8/21/2001 I am very aware that many intelligent people have trouble with grammar, spelling, and composition. I would never criticize them for language weakness in their private writing or informal communications. However, if they are intelligent, they should have realized by adulthood that they have a problem and make sure that someone more knowledgable proofreads their writing before they write anything for public consumption. To not do so smacks of incredible egotism or plain stupidity. You've got me Elle. Who is Caldonia? (See, I admit my lack of knowledge.) "Mini" Posted by Ellique on 18:20:51 8/21/2001 But what good does it do to publically tell everyone that you caught so and so in an error, a grammatical one at that? "Minii Mini" Posted by Ellique on 18:31:23 8/21/2001 Not so much incorrect as it was, say, ill-advised to use "context" instead of "meaning". No One knows more about Grammar than my beloved Mrs. King. She is my grammar guru extraordernaire. She says that if one uses complected instead of COMPLEXIONED, they are "not with it" even thought complected has indeed found its way into American English sort of like ain't instead of isn't or aren't etc. Tsk Tsk back at you but remember I love you just the same. "My dear Elle" Posted by Mini on 19:04:13 8/21/2001 I was trying to point out that there's a difference between private and public writing. If you're writing to influence people, surely it would make sense to give the impression that you're a skillful and intelligent writer. Whoever wrote that little spiel for the Ramseys certainly didn't do them a favor by showing his/her ignorance of language. It looked and sounded amateurish. I already explained the use of "complected" and you never answered me so I won't go into it again. And, yes, I know Mrs. King is a jewel but Florida is still correct. There's a big difference between minor errors and formal writing that has sentence fragments, incorrect punctuation, using a contraction for an adjective, etc. Ayelean's right. The quality of the writing reflects on one's perception of the writer or one's opinion of those whom the writer represents. Ask Mrs. King what she thinks. When I pointed out to Barnes & Noble that their sign saying "Open Everyday..." was incorrect, they actually changed it to "Every Day", so someone must care. Incidentally, if anyone shops at B&N I'd be curious to know if the signs in all their stores were changed. You know, Ellique, sometimes you are so gentlemanly and then all of a sudden you start getting a little bit mean. It's kind of like the way your writing style changes from time to time. Love, Mini [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 22. "Mini" Posted by Ellique on 14:11:52 8/22/2001 I am just an old and sometimes mean but sentamental cuss. You know how it is. When I said I WON!!! I was thinking back to the way "we lost in Vietnam" You know how we "Americans" like to brag about the fact that we never lost a war; therefore when our Government saw that there was no way of "winning" in Vietnam, it was proposed by maybe Johnny Carson or some others, including Washington types, that the best way to end it was to pronouce to the World that: "WE WON" and immediately get the L out. In a way, that is exactly what we did, Remember? Mini, we "Americans" are coining words all the time. Did you know that Shakespeare (sp) invented many many now standard English words, adjectives and adverbs, mainly. What is so internationally liked by the peoples the World, except France, is that our language is so flexible and easy to change even though changes sometime do complicate things for decades. This morning for example, I saw a word used by a reporter or somebody in the New York Post. They were reporting on the recent McDonald Scam you may have heard about. I went to the Post by link through Mrs. Brady's URLS. I digress, Well any way the "unquotationed" (see how easy it is) word was FRAUDSTERS. Now I can't find that word in any of my dictionaries. It may be that I have cheap reference books so I called Mrs. King and she said that FRAUDSTERS was a new one for her too. I sort of like the word, FRAUDSTERS. don't you? It says it all.... much better that having to say scammers or scam artists, IMHO. As I posted this, I went to my online Websters and guess what? NADA. If I had been Barns and Nobel's (sp) manager I would have thanked you warmly for bringing that out and then promptly said with clinched teeth without volume: You spell it your way lady and we will spell it ours if you don't mind. Based out your mindset, I take it that you would never step foot into another B&N until they cried "uncle" and changed it. I WIN, gdby, Love Ellique PS Just having fun with you Mini, Please humor your elders. PPS: How do you like my new word used in this post for the first time ever, I think!! B&N is a different story. They're part of the culture of literacy and a misspelled word on their sign doesn't fit that image. Ellique I do have to agree with Mini on B&N but then they have never been my favorite book store to begin with. B&N along with Amazon are over priced IMHO. Though I love browsing in a bookstore I rarely buy books in them anymore. I buy 98% of my books on-line now, to save money (see my site as I have referenced my favorite bookstore far to frequently on here already.) To be fair, I should say I buy most things on line since moving here. Seems like (shop owners think) all women are over a size 6, be it in clothes and shoes, no one has a bust size smaller than 34 and your choices are WallMart or paying Macy's prices at a non-Macy's store. Also to be fair, I have been told the two "department" stores will order your size for you. Now...how do I know I want it or those shoes are comfy if I can't try things on? OK - off my soap box. I paid $6.95 for my copy, and the publisher's site does not offer it in hardcover. The publisher also offers the book for sale for $6.95 DOI when it was publshed the price listed at Thomas/Nelson's site was either 23.95 or $24.95. I have been assured by Suzanne Goebel that there is no shipping or taxes added. LOL I guess not, they are selling the DOI and the $30.00 if purchased from that site will be tax-exempt. So will the $20.00's for Linda McLean's book. I bet they will deduct a fee for postage when they file their income tax return. (Friends For JonBenet.org I mean) Also, when Linda McLean released her book she made a statement that all profit would go into the JonBenet Ramsey Children's Foundation. I know that in late 99 or early 2000 they changed the foundation in some manner that they do not have to make their tax return's public. Can anyone help me with this. What action did they take that prevents the tax statement's for the foundation from being public knowledge. I know they also changed the mailing address for the foundation to an Atlanta P.O. Box. How can Linda McLean now donate her profit to the Friends For JonBenet organization? McLean also announced that she did not pay to have the book published.
