"stadium mums, cats" Posted by Cher on 21:55:42 8/22/2000 Szundi, yesterday I ordered 10 stadium mum plants and I did it all 'cuz of you. Remember when we had one of our gatherings and you asked us all if we wanted a stadium mum? I believe FT said she wanted one but I passed on it. Then when you guys wore them and I saw how pretty they were I said, darn why didn't I get one!? Well, the answer to that is because one would never do it for me; I would have to have about 30 or 40 to be happy. So to make myself happy I ordered these mum plants that will produce lots of stadium mums. I got rust color, gold, a color called "Mellow Moon," which is a cream color, and a rust and gold combination. Now, I hope our English professor colleagues here can help me with this. There was a short story I read as a freshman in college and it was called, "Chrysanthemum," I believe. I don't remember the author. I have searched off and on for this short story for 20 years! I want to read it again but I can't find it. Wonder if anyone can help? Mr. C told me a story about kitty that had me laughing. He came home and saw kitty sitting on the lawn near the end of the private road. The private road is about the length of a football field. When kitty saw Mr. C, she got all excited and ran for home just as fast as her little legs could carry her. Of course, Mr. C arrived before she did and he saw her coming up to our property via the lawn (she keeps her distance from cars, thankfully) and disappear into the bushes. What next emerged from the bushes was a cool, aloof kitty who, taking her time, sashayed to the general vicinity of Mr. C. She appeared to be inspecting the premises for bugs and barely noticed Mr. C. Yawned a few times, jumped on the hood of the car, and waited for Mr. C to come fawn over her. Cats. This is it, folks. The day we take our Number One Son off to college. So much nervousness, fear, anticipation, excitement, dread, disbelief, sadness, joy, pride - and that's just my feelings!! This is exactly what we raise them to do - strike out on their own in this big wide world and make a good go out it....and yet, it hurts just the tiniest bit to know that one phase is ending and cannot ever be recaptured. Where did the years go?? How did that cheerfully strong-willed, tow-headed imp grow up so quickly to the handsome and self-assured young man he's become??? In the back of my head I was thinking Steinbeck but said to myself, "Nah, that's too easy." Well, now I will have fun in the secondhand bookstores, tracking down my very own copy, which I intend to read when I experience the "good bitter smell" (p. 399) of chrysanthemums this fall. It's funny how we remember books from our college years, though, isn't it? I didn't keep that book but I recall it as a paperback with a large gold square on the left side of the cover and gold, brown, and red print on it. Who writes criticism/commentary on Steinbeck? Now I'll look good putting up hurricane shutters. Tonight. Of course, tonight. The same night as the Survivor finale. Thank God for VCR's. Well, here's the latest from here. Debby slowed down, lost some oomph, but they expect her to gear up again. She could make it to high Category 2 or low 3. That upper level missed her, and the one coming down from the middle of the US may just hold her down here. Card Sound Road/US 1 is repaired from what the gas/oil tanker did. They re-paved 18 miles of it during the night and it was open this AM, apparently. And, none too soon, since they are encouraging tourists to leave Key West. Next they will order them out or give a deadline. After that, they must stay. It's three hours from Key West to Miami on a good day, and bumper to bumper evacuation traffic up the one road out will be a nightmare, because the upper Keys may be bailing out, too. They try to stagger it, but it's like herding cats! One accident, and everybody is screwed. Debby's destination is still a mystery, and the forecasters are very nervous, since if she suddenly heats up and puts the pedal to the medal, she could catch people unprepared. Evacuations must be done on the coast, like South Beach, etc. The powers that be can't win. They get bitched at if they guess wrong. One hurricane jumped to a Category 5 one time, real close to Fla, and caught people flatfooted. You just never know, but have to make a choice whether to go to the mattresses or wing it. We may get Hurricane Watch today. We don't want to wait to put up shutters on upstairs windows when the squalls and wind are upon us. Tropical Weather Central Cassie over and out! Well it roared and thundered, rained all night and was to rain all day. Of course it isn't raining now and our wonderful cool, crisp Canadian air has turned slightly humid. Ugh. But I cannot complain, we don't have hurricanes or forest fires right here, so I am truly grateful. We did have a tornado though and it was horrible. Long time ago. My son continues on with his life as a wanderer. I truly hope he wanders back to university soon, but I doubt it will happen for some time. He picked beans in the Okanogan and made $6! I don't know how long it took, but he was not happy. He doesn't think there is much to be gained by staying and picking anything else, so he is off again. Hopefully he will reach the territory by Friday. I will be glad when he gets there. I found the Maher file on an alternate server they don't usually put me on, and, you're right, it's not out there in abundance. "~To strive, to seek, to find" Posted by FT on 13:28:29 8/23/2000 ... and not to yield.~ Tennyson coulda been a survivor. :-) A guest today on NPR's Morning Edition said the lesson of "Survivor" is that the mean shall inherit the earth. Stanley Bing, author of the book What Would Machiavelli Do? (subtitled The Ends Justifies the Meanness), said that people who prevail in this type of highly competitive situation are unmoved by human considerations. They are above and beyond issues of morality. Not "immoral," but "amoral." He said most of us choose not to live our lives in such a manipulative and strategic way, and that we are probably happier as individuals in the long run. But we will be voted off the island sooner than the people who are driven to win. I won't be able to watch the show tonight because we moved and don't have cable yet, and we can't tune in CBS. Can you believe that? But I might follow the goings-on at the "Survivor" forum on the Mighty Big TV website. Those folks are really into it. Nightowl, and anyone else who wants a file, I'm going out to dinner now, but did put up my ICQ and will put the number in the WOR when i get back ... about 10:pm est. Also, I think i've figured out the problem that's causing the file in question not to show up in the napster library. If I'm not 'way off base, it has to do with the Beta 6 version of napster (buggy ... real buggy). Later. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 36. I won't spit it out in case someone on the west coast doesn't know yet. I was waiting for the fur to start flying there. I'm on the West Coast, but with no real sleep for 3 nights I'm glad I don't have to try and stay up for it. I'll keep asking, where are Jeanilou and Sioux? Has anyone heard from either of them and if so please tell them I was asking about them. Chris, FP repost the Game is Afoot, please. I posted it on your thread repost request thread, but I don't know if you've had a chance to check it out. Glad you're back! :) Have a good evening all. I'm going to bed as soon as it's completely dark. That's about 10 minutes away...Yay! [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 41. "Survivor and snobs" Posted by DrTee on 21:34:22 8/23/2000 Gem, no I'm not a literary snob. I read a lot of trash. But I don't like Tennyson very much. He's just not perverse enough, for me, I guess. About Survivor, I'm pleased with the winner. But I'll hold off commenting further til the left coast checks in. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 42. I just take what they give me...plenty. ;-) [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 44. "Darn! Running late" Posted by Gemini on 22:10:45 8/23/2000 Night Owl, MrG is working on the problem, even as I type. He's going to try putting the file on an mp3 CD and uling it to the napster library that way. Cross your fingers. The server you draw is just chance, I think. I usually end up on the same one, but every once in a while, they send me to a different one. Maybe it has to do with how crowded the server is. I'll let you know how it goes. Know what you mean DrTee. Trash is part of my lifetime edu plan. Chris??? What ARE those two little things. Even if you don't think you like Rod McKuen (yes 'Tee, you too :-) ), dl and sample "The Art of Catching Trains", 'And To Each Season", and the Carnagie Hall version of "Stanyon Street". They don't fit the classical mold, but are eternally endearing. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 45.
