"Press Release from BPD about Interviews" Posted by ericasf on 12:17:54 8/29/2000 News Release August 29, 2000 Contact: Jana Petersen, Media Relations, (303) 441-3090 Jennifer Bray, Media Relations, (303) 441-3090 City's Home Page www.ci.boulder.co.us Ramsey Index Boulder Police Chief comments on Ramsey interviews (#79) Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner today commented on interviews with John and Patsy Ramsey that took place over the past two days. "We appreciate the opportunity to speak with John and Patsy Ramsey. We need some time to digest and debrief the interviews and the information we obtained, and we're not in a position to draw any conclusions at this time," he said. "Due to the parameters of the interviews, we were not able to go into everything we had hoped to in this setting," he said. "In that respect, it was less than we had hoped for." Regarding criticism of Special Prosecutor Mike Kane, Beckner said: "We certainly do not agree with the way Mike Kane was characterized by the Ramseys' attorney. Mike Kane has been an integral part of moving this investigation forward and has been a knowledgeable adviser to the investigation for more than two years. Just as it's the job of the Ramseys' attorney to aggressively defend his clients, it's the prosecutor's job to aggressively pursue justice in this case." The interviews began on Monday, with investigators questioning Patsy Ramsey for more than seven hours. Today, interviewers met with Patsy Ramsey for about 30 minutes and with John Ramsey for about 21/2 hours. [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 1. It couldn't have been that great a meeting for either side, as Beckner basically stated, and the fact that the infamous umbrella still looms. Dare we assume the entire thing was a tooth extraction ceremony? Or, do you think the "chasm" of distrust has closed, and the BPD will "keep in touch", lol? Posted by Edie Pratt on 14:55:08 8/29/2000 Oh, I think Beckner's a real person. If anything, even if he doesn't care as much about JFJBR as we do, I think he's fed up with the bad rap his dept. has recieved. What self-respecting law enforcment agency is going to take this constant harranging lieing down? I wouldn't. No, I'd make it my life's mission to prove my critics wrong, and would dog these people 'til Judgment day, be it here on Earth, or elsewhere. Beckner's got the entire world looking to him for an answer, I don't believe he CAN walk away, even if he wanted to. And, now that one of his own goes out there and disses the BPD, he's got to be fighting mad. I think he's real, real mad, anyway. According to patsy, they "answered every question" and she said this complete with fluttering eyes and that thing she does with her hands. Apparently, Wood wouldn't allow certain questions to be answered because the BPD wouldn't give them a forensic report in advance. So, here we go again. The really seem to expect (words to the contrary) that this is going to do it for them. Let's try to not let them get away with it. "From the wire" Posted by ericasf on 12:49:46 8/29/2000 JonBenet's parents finish questioning from Boulder investigators Aug. 29, 2000 | 1:15 p.m. By ERIN McCLAM Associated Press Writer ATLANTA (AP) -- John and Patsy Ramsey wrapped up two days of questioning from authorities investigating their daughter's death, and their attorney called on police to publicly clear the couple as suspects. ``The time has come for the police to come forward and publicly acknowledge that there's nothing left to do,'' attorney L. Lin Wood said as the interviews ended around noon Tuesday. ``The evidence is not there.'' The Ramseys said they had cooperated fully and gave the police other leads on who might have killed JonBenet. Mrs. Ramsey, addressing Boulder, Colo., Police Chief Mark Beckner, said, ``Whatever obstacles are in your way that make you think I killed my child, I want to help you get over that.'' Wood said the Ramseys refused to answer questions from the Boulder investigators about forensic evidence because they did not have the results of forensic tests performed by police. The two sides had squabbled Monday over special prosecutor Michael Kane's questions about forensic evidence, with Wood saying Kane was refusing to consider any suspects other than the 6-year-old's parents. In response, Kane said earlier Tuesday that Wood ``doesn't want his client to answer some tough questions'' about JonBenet's death in the family's home in Boulder. ``This case is ... almost four years old. Whether it's an intruder or somebody in the house who committed this homicide, there are some difficult, tough questions that have to be answered,'' he said. The investigators spent seven hours Monday questioning Mrs. Ramsey at Wood's office. They met with her again Tuesday morning and then met with her husband, wrapping up the sessions before noon. After the Monday session, Wood said Kane had reduced the questioning of Mrs. Ramsey to a ``fishing expedition'' to pin the child beauty queen's killing on her parents. He said Kane threatened to walk out of the interview with Mrs. Ramsey when the two sides argued over questioning about fiber evidence and security precautions for JonBenet's older brother, Burke. The latter was ``a series of questions that I don't think serve any useful purpose'' in finding the killer, Wood said. ``They may never clear our names till they find the killer,'' John Ramsey said Monday. ``We're not here to prove our innocence or clear our name. We're here to find the killer of our daughter.'' Wood said Monday that the investigators' questions, excluding those from Kane, were mostly fair. At a break in the talks Monday, Mrs. Ramsey had said she was ``very comfortable'' with questions investigators asked her in the morning session. ``I believe they're asking pertinent questions, so I'm happy to be there,'' she said. The two sides disagreed in the afternoon session over questions about fiber evidence from the investigators who Wood said didn't disclose all they knew about the evidence. The attorney said he also objected to questioning about Mrs. Ramsey's concern for 13-year-old Burke's security at school. Wood said that questioning did nothing to help prosecutors find JonBenet's killer. The Boulder investigators entered the interviews intending to question the Ramseys about forensic evidence and statements they made in their book, ``The Death of Innocence,'' in which the Ramseys defend themselves and write about people they consider suspects. JonBenet was found beaten and strangled on Dec. 26, 1996, in the basement of her family's Boulder home. No suspect has ever been named, though Beckner said her parents remain under suspicion. The Ramseys have denied any involvement. Police first interviewed the Ramseys separately in April 1997 after months of negotiations. They were questioned separately again in June 1998. A grand jury was convened in 1998 to investigate the slaying but disbanded without an indictment. Critics claim police botched the case early in the investigation and were overly deferential to the Ramseys, who now live in Atlanta. ------ On the Net: Ramseys' site: http://www.Ramseyfamily.com Boulder police: http://www.ci.boulder.co.us/police AP-CS-08-29-00 1412EDT [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 9. Posted by shadow on 13:02:30 8/29/2000 Wood - "...said Kane threatened to walk out of the interview with Mrs. Ramsey when the two sides argued over questioning about fiber evidence and security precautions for JonBenet's older brother, Burke. The latter was 'a series of questions that I don't think serve any useful purpose' in finding the killer, Wood said." As their attorney, Wood can advise JR and PR not to answer any question that he feels could cause them to get arrested. However, it is not Wood's job to determine what questions serve a "useful" purpose in "finding the killer." Lin Wood is getting away with murder as far as propoganda is concerned, and the media, as usual, is sleeping at the wheel. shadow [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 11. "Security precautions," Posted by gaiabetsy on 13:17:55 8/29/2000 So just what about those "real, not invented or embellished or dreamted of of etc. security precautions dealing with Burke are we talking about? "Won't they ever wake up!!" Posted by Sylvia on 13:55:15 8/29/2000 I have seen nothing these day that makes them less suspicious than before. Even Wood complaining about Kane, would give you the idea that, according to then, some questions aren't suppose to be asked as they might though ones. And if you look at those faces, laughing, well it looks more if they just have been at the dentist. Is the press that blind? Sylvia [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 13. "Hi, Sylvia!" Posted by Edie Pratt on 14:03:23 8/29/2000 right you are, the press must be blind. Those smiles of the Ramsey's just make me sick. I don't think I've EVER seen Marc Klaas smile, when addressing his or any other child's death. WHAT is so damned funny? I see her tumid cheeks dented in that plastic grin, and her cutesy wave to the crowd of media, and I want to slap it off her face! Bet JonBenet was REAL PROUD that mommy and daddy pulled her pants up before inviting the crew that morning. At least they gave her a "proper" staging. "You know Eddie" Posted by Sylvia on 14:18:45 8/29/2000 That is just one the things people here are amazed about as well, them laughing in those situations. It is said here, that when you loose a child in such a horrible way and whether the killer is still on the loose or not, you have no reason to smile. We have a case here as well, the murder of a 10 year-old-girl murdered while playing with an 11 year-old friend, who barely made it. Those parents do not seek the publicity, they act the opposite. Also cases open for maybe 6 to 10 years, when you see those parents on television, asking for help, they still cry and have a problem with telling their story because it hurts. And those two make it look like a day out in the park. I don't believe it. I wouldn't be able to laugh knowing my child went through all that, that alone would give me a reason to cry, to feel a terrible pain. Yeah, you are right, Eddie. Sylvia [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 18. "but, you know what IS funny, Syl?" Posted by Edie Pratt on 14:33:19 8/29/2000 the fact that it's nearly 4 yrs since her death, and those two act like they're playing Survivor! Big sighs and "PHEW!", "we got thru it", and "it was nerve wracking", etc., are the things someone says when going thru an ordeal or contest, NOT when they're innocent, caring parents of a murdered child. Again, what was the "risk" their atty. was crowing about? Are we the only people listening to this crap, or does the casual observer see what we see, too? Me thinks thou protesteth too much, as the saying goes. If it weren't so sick, I'd say they are the funniest thing on tv these days, bar none. "I couldn't agree with you more" Posted by Sylvia on 14:50:45 8/29/2000 these two are the most despicable people I have ever seen. And I think most people see it, but some happen to be blind or want to be blind. I would say most want to be blind, maybe they think it is safer that way. As far as I am concerned, I don't care safe or not, because they get what is coming to them. They are treated by me they way they behave and all they have done is behave like suspects, by hiring lawyer from day one and by not cooperating. If they don't like it that is their problem. I find them disgusting. Sylvia [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 17.
