Posted by Dunvegan on 23:04:26 9/26/2001 NOTE: This message was last edited 23:04:26, 9/26/2001 A compendium of Carl Jung quotes on living a good life, psycosis, sanity, and compassion. I'm finding these quotes to be helpful in coping with both the new war with terrorists...and current and unnecessary flame wars from both individuals and forum collectives: The healthy man does not torture others-generally it is the tortured who turn into torturers. If you imagine someone who is brave enough to withdraw all his projections, then you get an individual who is conscious of a pretty thick shadow. Such a man has saddled himself with new problems and conflicts. He has become a serious problem to himself, as he is now unable to say that they do this or that, they are wrong, and they must be fought against. He lives in the "House of the Gathering." Such a man knows that whatever is wrong in the world is in himself, and if he only learns to deal with his own shadow he has done something real for the world. He has succeeded in shouldering at least an infinitesimal part of the gigantic, unsolved social problems of our day. An inflated consciousness is always egocentric and conscious of nothing but its own existence. It is incapable of learning from the past, incapable of understanding contemporary events, and incapable of drawing right conclusions about the future. It is hypnotized by itself and therefore cannot be argued with. It inevitably dooms itself to calamities that must strike it dead. Understanding does not cure evil, but it is a definite help, inasmuch as one can cope with a comprehensible darkness. It is a fact that cannot be denied: the wickedness of others becomes our own wickedness because it kindles something evil in our own hearts. If one does not understand a person, one tends to regard him as a fool. If people can be educated to see the lowly side of their own natures, it may be hoped that they will also learn to understand and to love their fellow men better. A little less hypocrisy and a little more tolerance towards oneself can only have good results in respect for our neighbor; for we are all too prone to transfer to our fellows the injustice and violence we inflict upon our own natures. Resistance to the organized mass can be effected only by the man who is as well organized in his individuality as the mass itself. The greatest and most important problems of life are all fundamentally insoluble. They can never be solved but only outgrown. (Suggested by Blackbird/Mr. Dunvegan) The pendulum of the mind alternates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong. Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the Shadow of the other. Archetypes resemble the beds of rivers: dried up because the water has deserted them, though it may return at any time. An archetype is something like an old watercourse along which the water of life flowed for a time, digging a deep channel for itself. The longer it flowed the deeper the channel, and the more likely it is that sooner or later the water will return. The psychiatrist knows only too well how each of us becomes the helpless but not pitiable victim of his own sentiments. Sentimentality is the superstructure erected upon brutality. If there is anything that we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could better be changed in ourselves. A "scream" is always just that-a noise and not music. The wise man who is not heeded is counted a fool, and the fool who proclaims the general folly first and loudest passes for a prophet and Führer, and sometimes it is luckily the other way round as well, or else mankind would long since have perished of stupidity. Man needs difficulties; they are necessary for health. Knowing your own darkness is the best method for dealing with the darknesses of other people As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being. Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves. If a man is endowed with an ethical sense and is convinced of the sanctity of ethical values, he is on the surest road to a conflict of duty. And although this looks desperately like a moral catastrophe, it alone makes possible a higher differentiation of ethics and a broadening of consciousness. A conflict of duty forces us to examine our conscience and thereby to discover the shadow. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 2. "Mornin'" Posted by Mandarin on 22:56:10 9/26/2001 I think I'm going to be a Jungian fan; that was a good read - a lot of food for thought there. As my Dad used to say often, "this too will pass" and it ALWAYS does. Keep up that positive attitude Dun; Can't wait till the papers arrive; at least then it just MAY restore a bit of the confidence I've lost as of late. Nevertheless, as with any board (home or company) there are bound to be a few bumps with a changeover. My years at IBM made me think a day was not normal if it did not involve change and some chaos here and there. Here's to the future of JW ... Victory, S.B.T.C. So, if that is what it takes, I too am a cat lover though I only have 3 but I do have a dog also! I have enjoyed the inspiration that this forum gives to make it through these terrible times. Like everyone else, I need a place to discuss hopes and fears of what is to come. Although I have read the hostility of some, I think that for the most part, the people here are caring and willing to be of comfort to others. The rest should just be ignored. "Shalom again" Posted by Ally on 06:23:57 9/27/2001 to all our Jewish friends. Good compendium of quotes, Dunvegan, and great way to start the day!! Heard on the news today that fighter pilots have been given the right to shoot down passenger planes if they think they're being hijacked. Isn't that a little like giving a squirt gun to a kindergartner? Don't like it don't like it not one little bit. It's enough we have to worry about being hijacked, and now additionally, we have the added implication of shoot first ask questions later while we fly the friendly skies. I'll bet terrorists love imposing this new fear upon us, that we could even be shot down by friendly fire. I also saw a riveting interview on the morning news with a trained terrorist who has been arrested overseas somewhere, who is actually a *defector* because after his extensive training at a camp in Afghanistan he realized he could not carry out all the death and destruction for which he had been meticulously trained. They are trained at these camps and sent out to establish their own groups in other countries to wreak havoc and terror wherever they can. He spoke of seeing bin Laden several times: said he does believe he lives in fear, never stays in one place more than 48 hours. He travels with bodyguards (some of whom are his own sons) and weapons. He said bin Laden believes the US will assassinate him eventually, but that this will not put a stop to terrorism and their goals because everything is already in place, and most groups once they have been through the training are set up to operate autonomously. He is still being debriefed but I believe the information authorities obtain from him will prove invaluable. Hope so. On that note, Good Morning World. Voyager, there's going to be a specially written West Wing episode on in October that deals with the events of September. Barnes & Noble has a free on-line "university" at barnesandnobleuniversity.com. My daughter signed up for "Our Western Heritage, 1500 to Today." She checked out the required book from the library so it's totally free. This is my bright, college-degreed daughter who had never heard of the Crusades and thought a kamikaze was just a drink. Until now, she thought a college degree was only to establish a well-paying career despite what her librarian mother tried to tell her about reading. I think I may join her for the course.
