"Before I go to sleep, just these thoughts..." Posted by Dunvegan on 23:46:07 9/27/2001 1.Chris never asked me for any money for this domain. I never offered her any, just sent her an e-mail saying I'd like to see Justice Watch live on, if possible, and I'd be happy to take on the task. She wrote back in the affirmative, and asked me how I wanted to do it...and how I wanted to do the domain transfer. 2.Chris offered it to me with no strings attached. Why? Well, I thought it was because I said I wanted to see the forum continue and familiar with forum software, and I wanted Justice Watch to remain alive and vital. 3.I would never sell this place myself that is home to so many. But I would add more case content, more cases, and more information like links to transcripts, articles, and such. I, just like Chris, would hand it over to a member to continue. 4.I don't understand the Queen thing...usually people who administer web forums are called webmasters. Obviously, I am not one of their dynasty. Don't want to be. But, as a professional, I would like to be a good webmaster. I've heard a great deal, and been told what to do, and where to tread for some time now in managing this forum. From a hundred different directions. On my own, I had finally decided to change the format so that content equaled talk, to add services and resources...especially in these slack times for the Ramsey case. There are other cases that deserve our attention. And, my intention was to, along with other members, find them and put our good minds to work. 5.I have disabled some accounts. Some people were throwing gasoline on the fire. Others had stated threats and intentions to bring the board down, people I had trusted and liked quite a deal, online. Some of those people go back many years in the Ramsey case. I still have many lines of argument and slander to go through tomorrow to try and get to the bottom of this. If you had said a week ago that for the security of the fourm, I would have to deactivate some of the old time users because they indended to take this board down...I would have no more believed it than if a month ago someone told me two terrorists flying passenger jets would take out the World Trade Center. 6.I have been praying for the domain transfer, so that this place could thrive in a slightly different environment. A miniature apbnews.online type forum. I've already set up the hosting site, the internal chat rooms, the internal fourms and have been waiting, along with my web host, to point the forum there. Something that augmented my skills as a hobby and as a craft. Something enjoyable for all. 7.I think all of this is an abomination...and in a tragic and unfortunate way, a desceration of the memory of JonBenet Ramsey, and any other victim of violent crime. The influx of troublemakers by invasion and flame-war borders on the criminal. This is just plain wrong. 8.I know I am being accused of bad administration, but would any of you wish to trade situations with me? If so, what would you do? 9.Chris told me face-to-face she would support my efforts here at Justice Watch. And, why not? She said that she chose to give it to me. At least, that is what she said directly to me before myself, my husband, and her husband. We all shook hands on the deal. She'd get to go to school, I'd get the work and the domain. 10.I just wanted to do some good HTML, some good CGI, and some good in the world. End of story. I hope this board will be here when I wake up tomorrow...it's your home, and I apologize to those who usually feel most comfortable here for today's havoc...I even ask you to please excuse my naivety. I have no bad feelings for anyone, except the fate of this board. I thought that this was all fair play and simple board management. I thought it was all about justice for victims and for JonBenet. We don't live in a perfect world and transition always has thorns and unpleasantness. No one escapes that. The new forum will be fine. Of course, it's easy for the rest of us to sit back and hope everything will work out but know this; we realize that to a large extent you are fighting this battle alone and are working very hard to make things better. Dun, they WILL get better but that is not to say that we will all be like happy clams. We never were and we never will be. You lose some, you gain some - that's life. Your integrity is not in question here, so take a break from all the worry and be glad we got to Friday. I'll have a little Bailey's the moment I hear you got the papers. Even if it's not tomorrow, who cares. They wil come, of that I am sure. And you know what, a lot of people are just flapping their wings; they'll be here next week and the next. I don't know about right now, but I know right after the WTC horror, there were no guarantees by any of the overnight places, including USPS, because planes were grounded. There may be a backlog of Priority, and I don't know about stuff going from east to west, but mail going from west to east takes one day longer than it did a month ago because lots of the air mail was discontinued. Posted by Dunvegan on 06:53:57 9/28/2001 ...including Chris' account and will look at reactivating them after the viciousness ends. I was told yesterday that a number of people wanted to see this forum taken down, and had backdoors to the server. I deactivated accounts based on two criteria: 1. Posters who were arguing for the sake of argument and disruption, and 2. Any member that could have residual administrative rights that could allow them to bring down the forum. Tempers were running high...and there were rumors passed on to me that there were some people posting at other forums who stated they wanted to bring this board down permanently, and knew how to do it. For the sake of order, I deactivated a list of members that met that criteria. As Chris has administrative rights on the hosting server, I temporaraly deactivated her account. I did not remove it, but I did deactivate it until the smoke clears. I hesitated, because I really didn't want to have to take that step...but, things were getting worse rather than better, so sadly, I deactivated the accounts of Chris and several others who were calling for the downfall of Justice Watch. The word "banning" connotates banishment. I am not interested in banishing anyone...but arguing, threats to bring down the forum, and flaming is all this forum was about yesterday. And, to quell the flames, I turned off a number of accounts. Turned off, deactivated...but not deleted. When the e-mail arrived about the webmaster account being deactivated, I posted it to see if I indeed had been deactivated...my understanding was at the very time I was working with accounts, someone else was trying to bring the board down. I also have been told that it was very possible that "back doors" were left in the fourm software to allow former administrators to take control of the board if they wanted to. Until I can get to the truth of what is happening here, I have deactivated several former admins. It was a safety measure. Nothing more, nothing less. I received e-mails that copied things said on FS that seemed to indicate that the intent of some members yesterday was simply to destroy this board. So, I took action. Whenever a company has reason to believe that a systems administrator might pose a threat to systems because of disgruntlement...the first thing you're taught to do in information security is to deactivate that admin and any of their former admin accounts before anything destructive has a chance to happen. After that, you can sort things out...and meanwhile, all the data is safe. It gives the servers protection, and the new administrator gets a chance to catch their breath...and it buys adequate time to surmise the situation. I'm beginning to think it only makes sense to bring the board down entirely until the paperwork is completed, and then start registration at a new hosting site, with a somewhat new format. I've never been in the middle of such a emotional fire storm and it's astounding to me that this is all happining at a simple discussion forum. Yesterday my first reaction was to secure the forum, backup the board to another server, and deactivate accounts until I can get to the bottom of what is going on. That is what I did. The next step would have been just bring the server off-line entirely, with the exception of a front page. It didn't get quite that far...but I couldn't possibly try to get to the bottom of the problems, and keep up with the rapid-fire flame war posts, and defend against rumors of a hostile take over by exploiting a software bug, without first securing the server. So the answer to your question is, "Yes. I did deactivate Chris' account." The e-mails that were sent to me and were written by certain posters at FlameSleuths showed intense anger and possible intent to harm this board. A cooling off was imposed. My fear is that it is probable that if I reinstate the deactivated members that are so angry and bitter, it will take us back to yesterday immediately. Very few people seemed to have a modicum of common sense yesterday...and, if that includes me, so be it. But, I acted instinctually. The forum was being attacked. If Chris genuinely wishes to post here, and does not plan to sabotage the forum, she is welcome, and I would be happy to reactivate her account. That includes anyone else who has been deactivated...anyone wishing to discuss issues is welcome. But, the Twilight Zone that happened yesterday felt very much like a set-up. I need to know what's going on first. Because I simply cannot understand the point of all of this fighting. I also think the transfer of a fourm should be simple and amicable. I turned my Rideshare forum over to a new sysop with a full set of instructions on the foibles of the software, all the software manuals, and a handshake. I never looked back, and certainly didn't try to or threaten to destroy the board (which did have some vendor built-in backdoors in case the admin accidentally locked themselves out.) But for sometime now, I have heard and seen that this is not the case here. I think it may be safe to say that those members posting "BURN BABY BURN!" and other such inflammatory nonsense have only ill-will towards this forum. Free speech is protected. Hate language and (what the law calls) "fighting words" are not. I still may close the forum completely until the paperwork arrives, so as to put a complete end to this tragic slugfest. It's not productive and is damaging to all, especially the reputation and usefulness of this forum. The new software includes forums, but also filters for keywords (so it can be configured to alert on the more vicious flames and profanity) but will take some of the emphasis off the forum side, and add more to the content side. Since the only news is thin and none for the present on the Ramsey case, it seems no one can think of any other diversion than fighting among ourselves. The question I am seeking the answer to is why all the hostility? Can't people discuss issues without name calling, viciousness, and baiting at this forum? I have been informed (but cannot confirm) that the intent was for this forum to fail after Chris left. If that is true, why didn't Chris just say, "I'm going back to school, this forum is closing. No one can run it like I'd like it to be run...so, I'll just close it." Or, this board could have been ceeded to someone in complete and absolute agreement with Chris' point of view. Why would someone so very much want a forum that is built to seek justice, to fail? [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 14. "Have you been to bed yet?" When I signed in I noticed the Beyond and WOR forums have vanished, but have permeated to other discussions. I'm not even going to try to catch up; I think I get the drift. There will always be people trying to be destructive and egotistical. Let 'em have their fun elsewhere and don't interact with them. When this case picks up there will be threads crammed with tips and real discussion. If JW ever wants to be taken seriously as a tool to advance this case, it has to take a strong line against troublemakers. Dunv, I applaud your efforts to expand beyond the Ramsey case -- there are so many other issues to discuss. I haven't gone to the Terrorism threads but I'm sure they're touching and productive. I'm too busy now to hop around but want to add a couple things: There's a group called Three Dog Bakery which runs dog food stores; they are collecting monies for boots for the recovery and cadaver dogs. You can find the contact info on the net, I'm sure. I've met some of these tremendous dogs, and under good conditions what they do is valuable, but think of how they're suffering walking on debris, glass and chemicals. Another thing is I happen to have friends near by Ground Zero; in fact I was supposed to be staying near there around mid-Sept but my plans changed. I ended up sending my trip money to the Red Cross and United Way, which is no big deal. But I also sent my pals money for cookies which they deliver every few days for the workers. There's something comforting to me to know there are some real faces getting a few seconds of something nice. Fire Station #3 is the one which sustained many losses, so if you want to send cookies there, do; I don't have the address. If you know anyone who's going to visit, make them take cookies. You have a cookie too, Dunv! Your plans are doable and appreciated but don't get burned out fighting dopes or trying to explain every little decision. The majority of people here will understand. It's like that poster who always wrote: "It's the people's evidence, we're entitled to know!" Or the other one who thought the cops/FBI should share their results. Sorry! Off limits! LE has no problem ignoring those kinds of crybabies, so should you. Finally, with apologies for not posting in proper forums... I know some of the people who work on Mad TV, which people were discussing here somewhere. The show is now syndicated in several markets, which means the three Ramsey sketches they've done will air repeatedly. Two were Hollywood Squares skits, one was about the crockumentary. John is played by Michael McDonald, and Patsy by Alex Bornstein. Someone guessed it was Mo Collins; both women are extremely versatile comics. Brian Lamb just took a call on C-SPAN by a guy who was blaming the terrorism on a Masonic plot. Betsy, I didn't know you were a dude! How long will it take before another famous hoax is mentioned? The serious case discussers are gone and that leaves the cheerleaders, none of whom contribute to the case at all. This is becoming an entire forum consisting of one big daily thread. Posted by Dunvegan on 09:12:29 9/28/2001 ...and want all the best minds at Justice Watch. The deactivations were not meant as censoring...I included my e-mail so that the members could contact me and that way we could discuss the issues around "The Troubles." I'm ready to talk and ask for reason and civility in posts. I'd very much like getting back on sound and cooperative grounds with the posters who were deactivated. But, if the things being said at FlameSleuths about bringing down JW...I have to take those posters at their word, and protect the board. I deactivated, as I said above, on two criteria: 1. The poster was posting personal attacks, and/or fanning the grass fires of a monumental flame war. 2. People who have had admin rights to the forum. They possibly could have installed, or have knowledge of a software flaw where they can destroy the forum. Especially those who are actualling cheering on a JW demise on their own forum. It can be elementary to get back into a forum if none of the proper patches were ever applied, There still some security risks where those who have made their intent to destroy JW exist. I've gone in and put all the applicable security software patches on the forum software. Here's the type of thing that can happen if you don't patch your software and someone wants to lock you out of your board: admin@cgisecurity.com DCForum Major security issues 1. Impact Any file can be read with the permissions of user nobody(or webserver) Posible root comprimise in /dcforum/dcboard.cgi script. Command execution is not allowed. 2. Damage caused It causes the deletion of dcboard.cgi if you ask it to view its own source. Cause for this is unknown as of now since I do not have the source. For the above reason I cannot release the exploit itself at this point in time. I would release it but it caused to much damage by "clicking on a link". If it simply gave you passwd file that would be one thing but it deleted data and perhaps more not know of yet. 3. Fixes The vendor has been contacted about this serious security problem. A patch was issued within 1 hour of the finding of this hole. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 28. "Dunvegan: The Road Ahead" Posted by emerckx on 09:06:27 9/28/2001 No matter how bumpy the road becomes to either "transitioning" the forum from the past administration to the new or to simply starting a new forum, I'm with you, Dunvegan, along with anyone else who still cares one little shred about finding justice for the murder of JonBenet Ramsey. Just trying to keep things in perspective here . . . . Speaking of starting a "new" forum, how would one find out where and when such an action would occur? Would you give us some notice on the daily thread, for instance? I hate to think of JW simply vanishing, but if the papers never arrive, I suppose that could be a real possibility. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that the deal goes through as planned. -em [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 32. "show me" Posted by v_p on 09:10:31 9/28/2001 What are you talking about? lol Today is the calmest the forum has been in a week. Everything is going to be fine. Ignore the hit and run posters who are giving it one last ditch effort... they won't win and we know that... Peace [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 35. "V_P..." Posted by Charley on 09:25:12 9/28/2001 Your agenda is clear...take down JW! You along with a few others, that have suceeded to rid JW of the best. Remember this, Justice will be served for JB! With or without JW. Deactivate me now....I wish to go down with the best. This forum is no longer about JB, but about a select few who want to bring this forum down. These sly sleazes will turn on each other eventually and then you Dun! By the time you realize that it will be too late! [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 34. "I think everyone in the Free World has..."
