"Thank you for coming here, Starling" Posted by Ev on 00:49:52 11/29/2000 I know this is hard for you. I had to fly home alone to my father's funeral the first week in December of 1987. (We had seven deaths in our family that year.) My flight left late and I had to run through the Kansas City airport and arrived at the connecting airline in a heap and late. Was told they were holding up flights for other west coast arrivals, so I sat down with my dry mouth and attempted to use a stick of gum. I was so parched that I couldn't even get the gum going! On top of that, there was a little TV in the corner and they were showing that program (I had never watched) about a family, with Wilford Brimley, and it was a summer rerun. They were going on a ride out to a picnic and were all singing, "You Are My Sunshine." My father loved to sing, "You Are My Sunshine." He sang it to us when we were little, and we grew up hearing him singing it as he did his farmwork, even coming home on the tractor. I knew that my father was beside me there in that airport. Of all the songs in the world to hear that day in December! When I told my younger sister about it after the funeral service, it finally overcame me, and I cried like a baby. You will have many poignant reminders of your father, wherever you go. At first they caused sorrow because grief was so fresh, but after awhile they become comforting. I hope that the expressions of care from your fellow posters here is of some comfort to you during this time. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 3. Posted by Watching you on 06:42:37 11/29/2000 every time I click my mouse, it makes a snapping noise on the computer. Dumb thing. Starling, not a day goes by that I don't miss my dad. He passed over nearly four years ago. Time heals but some things just can't be replaced - the love of a father is one of those things. You are in my thoughts. Okay, everyone, do you ever get out of bed feeling so full of joy and hilarity (that's hilarity, not Hillary) you are near to bursting with it? Actually, that happens to me on a regular basis - rarely do I get ugly, unless I'm sick or someone gets on my nerve. Today I am so full of energy and fun, it's oozing out my pores. Now, don't anyone go and piss me off. Oh, before I forget, here's the concession phone call Gore made to Bush and a couple of others: http://www.mediatrip.com/shows/phone_flash.html Your bit of education for today: scientists have discovered the location of our funny bones. It is in the right frontal lobe of our brains, just above the right eye. I was glad to learn that, because now I know why that area is always twitching on me. My right frontal lobe has got to be huge, since I have few serious bones in my body. Life is a trip, meant to be experienced, every last bit of it - good with the bad. Oh, and did you know that people who laugh a lot are healthier? 'Tis true, I believe, because happy, laughing folks have stronger immune systems due to the production of more T cells, or something like that. I heard it on the radio this morning, and I already knew that, anyways, because I know how stress affects the immune system. So, the moral of the story is: laugh a lot and live longer and don't take life too seriously. A hundred years from now, who's going to care, anyways? I guess that about does it for today. Had to post twice as much this morning because you all missed me yesterday, I know. One last parting shot, haha, I started out disliking Gore a little. Now I despise the simpering wimp. Every time I see him swagger to the microphone to whine some more, I want to bitch slap him. The STORM - so I suppose y'all heard about it - Buffalo got hammered good. They say it was like the Blizzard of '77, but I know better. I was in the Blizzard of '77, and that lasted for three days. It took us two weeks to get out of our house. There was still snow in the hills at the end of June. This blizzard hit fast and furious, though, and for a while, it was like 1977. It just didn't last as long. We missed the huge brunt of the storm, being about 15 miles south of the snow belt, but we got about six inches of blowing and drifting snow - easy stuff for us. Buffalo was paralyzed - it came down so fast and visibility was zero. School buses were trapped, kids were hustled off the buses after a while and taken to shelters. The whole city of Buffalo and the interstate were parking lots - no one could get in or out. Thank heavens Buffalo people are veterans of horrendous lake effect storms and everyone helps out everyone else. News people stayed on the air over 24 hours - they gave the news the next day in the same clothes they wore the day the storm hit. Many kids were kept overnight in school - some didn't get home until the next night. It was bad. But, once again, Buffalo dug out and was back in operation within two days. Way to go, Buffalo. Pat Caddell, former Democratic pollster and presently producer of 'West Wing' says David Boies misled the Florida Supremes. Illinois did NOT count dimpled chads. Caddell said Boies told the Supremes that Illinois counted dimples and then the Gore weasel took their ruling down to the Fla counties and badgered them with a ruling based on a misrepresentation. Those good ol' boys up thar won't be liking that too much! They might have to give him an old fashioned ass whuppin'. BTW, Michael Kelly has a great article in the NYPost today. Opinion, Op/Ed. called "Destroying Democracy to Preserve It" (something like that) This morning early, before Imus on MSNBC, they were re-running a 'Time and Again, and Again, and Again' called "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House". Ev, your story made me cry. It's so very hard to deal with the loss of our loved ones, but somehow we struggle through it. The pain fades, but never completely goes away. Staying very busy, was the only thing that got me through my own dad's illness and death. As a result of liver cancer, I watched him go from an exceptionally healthy, 185 pound, energetic man to an extremely sick 120 pounds, in less than four months time. It was terribly heartbreaking, but when I realized all the pain he was enduring, and that he wasn't getting any better, I was finally able to let go. It was a relief to know that he was going to a much better place. It's been over eleven years, now, and I still miss him dearly. Have a good Wednesday, guys. Love and peace to all. "I want to bitch slap Craig" Posted by Holly on 08:51:55 11/29/2000 Jarret of MSNBC. After TeamBore lallygagged for days by demanding hand counts and court cases and appealing Judge Lewis' ruling to the FL Supreme Court, then delayed an additional four hours getting their bony butts into court with their contest, Craig Jarret had the gall to accuse the BUSH lawyers of purposely slowing the process and obstructing. It's called DUE PROCESS, stoopid. Under FL law, defendants have 10 days to respond to a contest. Bush lawyers offered to get on the stick and do it in just 72 hours, and the judge, uncomfortable with that offer tacked on another day, noting the need for DUE PROCESS, stoopid. Bill Gates basher Boies started bellyaching about COUNTING THE VOTES. Never mind the ballots are at the other end of FL. Never mind there has been no testimony or argument regarding standards for review. Boies is not interested in DUE PROCESS, because he wants to get out of FL before the Supreme Court in FL figures out he lied about the IL law to obtain a favorable ruling. Geesh. Maybe the US Supremes will put an end to this. But don't count on it. Have a great day all. [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 17. "2000 Curse" Posted by janab on 10:43:38 11/29/2000 NOTE: This message was last edited 10:43:38, 11/29/2000 Although I never heard it mentioned during the campaign, it was mentioned by a poster a while back. Tragedy for those elected in years ending in zero. 1800 - Jefferson, died broke (but still living the large life in a mansion) on the 4th of July 1826 1820 - Monroe, died broke (living in an apartment with his daughter in New York) on the 4th of July 1831 1840 - Harrison, got sick and died following inauguration 1860 - Lincoln, shot and killed in office 1880 - Garfield, shot and killed in office 1900 - McKinnley, shot and killed in office 1920 - Harding, got sick and died in office (many historians believe he was poisoned by his wife) 1940 - Roosevelt, got old and died in office 1960 - Kennedy, shot and killed in office 1980 - Reagan, shot, but not killed in office, became mentally suspect in office 2000 - ? Only other President to die in office - Zachary Taylor. No other Presidents were shot in office, although shots were taken at a couple others. With this coming President 42 men will have been President (I know the next one will be the 43rd President, but Grover Cleveland was the 22nd and 24th Presidents). Whether the new President survives his term or not, approximately 1 in 5 Presidents will have died in office. Approximately 1 in 8 gets shot and 1 in 10 gets shot and killed. If this President gets shot, that goes to 1 in 7 and if killed, 1 in 9. If you are elected in a year ending with zero, your odds of getting shot are 50/50 and shot and killed 4 in 10. Elected in a year ended in zero, 70% likelihood of dying in office. Surviving the presidency is more dangerous than playing Russian roulette. At first I thought neither current candidate should be permitted to serve because they must have a death wish. Then, it hit me, I realized why Al Gore is the overwhelmingly correct choice. He isn't dragging the election out because he is selfish or wants to hurt the Country, he is just trying to stretch the election into the new year so he will not be elected in a year ending in zero. Sorry to waste your time with this, but I just had to get it off my chest. Also, someone in Texas has filed a lawsuit because it seems that it is illegal for the electors from a state to vote for a President and Vice President who are both from that state (or something like that). And, although Cheney claims to live in Wyoming, we (here in Texas) know better than that. He has been a resident of this state for a while now. This could, if successful, have several outcomes. All of the electors could have to switch and vote for Gore or they could chose to vote for a Republican President and a Vice President who is a Democrat. Oooooh, a Bush/Lieberman ticket? I'm sure I got something wrong with the above story (about the lawsuit) and someone will come in screaming about how wrong I am, but I hadn't seen it mentioned, wanted to pass it along, and don't have time to look up the complete story. This, I got as a tidbit on our news radio station. Their stories are never very long. Another interesting story I heard on the way home from work yesterday was about a study done to compare the brain activity of men and women while they were in the process of listening. Apparently, men only registered brain activity in half of their brain, while women used both halves in order to process the information. Could be seen either way, I guess. Men only use half of their brain when they claim to be listening to us (which we knew already) or...women have to use twice as much of their brain power in order to process the same amount of information as half of a man's brain. Did that come out right? . janab [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 33. "I don't know Janab" Posted by Midnight_Wolf on 11:03:14 11/29/2000 I had it down to a quarter of the brain. And sometimes I think that is even a pretty high estimate. Want to sit next to me? (Heh, heh, heh!) Thank you, 7klutz. I was feeling pretty stupid for thinking that his name was Gregg and that I thought he was pretty good, too! Roger, Cassie. I've switched to C-span. This whole thing is becoming a characature of itself, if that's possible. Jelly! [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 32. "Mort...&...Jelly" Posted by Cassandra on 11:00:18 11/29/2000 AHA!!! The Dems flew those people to Tallahassee! That explains it! I hope you guys saw the woman who was either on something, drunk, or insane (one of our posters thinks she was on drugs) and the other woman who had to go to the emergency room twice she was so upset about her ballot! What a crowd of losers! Now remember you guys, you have stupid people in your states too, ours are just on display right now. Soon they will be back in the attic where they belong! LOL I was almost ashamed to say I was from Florida while we were on vacation. We got ragged every place we went! There were Fla and Gore jokes flying from all sides! We were tempted to ask for special Florida menus when we went out to eat! LOL Cassie [ REMOVE ] [ ALERT ] [ EDIT ] [ REPLY ] [ REPLY WITH QUOTE ] [ TOP ] [ MAIN ] 31. "janab" Posted by Cher on 11:00:12 11/29/2000 Janab, regarding your odds about the president getting shot, I do think there is a very good possibility that if Gore comes out the winner, some Republican gun nut will assassinate him. I also think that if Gore gets into the White House, there should be a nationwide alert through social service agencies that service clients who are subject to spousal abuse. The type of dysfunctional, angry men who stormed the Miami-Dade canvassing office are the same types who would inappropriately take out their anger on their wives and children. Cher .
